coilgun/circuit diagram

Thread Starter
im not real good with circuit diagrams, and i know thats pretty much a requirement when it comes to building stuff, but oh well. anyways i was trying to make a small coilgun just for the heck of it. i dont know if any of you are familiar with coilguns but heres the little diagram i needed help with

heres the page its from http://www.geocities.com/njh_howard/...c_coilgun.html

i know what everything is except for the little thing that looks like a "T" and the triangle with the circle. im guessing the triangle thing is the SCR mentioned in the parts list. ive got a little piece labled SCR2146 and im guessing that will work, but im not sure which wires to run to what. also there are a couple different websites i have looked at and several of them have very different ways of making coil guns out of disposible camera flashes like i am. here are a couple of the different sites that showed different ways of making one, i was wondering if anybody could tell me if each way would actually work or not

http://www.electronics-lab.com/proje...017/index.html
http://www.angelfire.com/80s/sixmhz/cgkit.html
http://www.jeffhove.com/robots/coilgunhowto.html

i also had one more question. if im going to add one or more capacitors do they all need to be the same kind or can some be bigger than others. if i could get some help with this stuff that would be awesome, thanks

The symbol is actually that for a not-gate with isolated output. Its not actually a SCR, but its function is close - probably the wrong symbol was used.

Exactly why its needed rather than just running the current through the switch I do not know... presumably its to prevent arcing. You should have three pins - cathode, anode and gate. The wire from the switch goes to the gate. From capacitor to anode. From coil to cathode. The SCR supplier should say which pin is which.

If you want more power, add more capacitors.

It's use in the circuit is to hold the capacitor discharge every so slightly until full circuit switch has been made, then releasing it to the coil.

Its only a one-stage though. Ive read about multi-stage accelerators that can launch marble-sized pieces at hundreds of meters per second. They are used in materials testing, as the speed is much more consistant than could be achieved by explosive or pnumatic launch. Fire your test projectile, and measure the hole it makes.

I thot it was a diode and a regular push switch....
Hey, i gots a better idea!
U wana build a serious rail gun?
I know a place to get 100 000 microfarad electrolyte caps for like 80v. Dam things r like the size of my head!
Anyway, i was thinking, i can get one, and some parts and a crap load of wire... Heck, maybe i can outdate the bfh!
Make a bfrg (big f***in rail gun)!
Wouldnt it be fun to hurtle a pentium mmx at 200mph?
