My Realtek/windows7/overclocking headache - Plz Help

Thread Starter
I'm having a really wierd problem with my overclock and audio in games. I know its my OC because at stock the problem goes away. Here's my rig:

evga 680i mobo revision a1
q6700 oc'd to 3.33 - p95 stable 24hrs at 1.43v - 1333 fsb - 10x multi
OCZ reaper pc-8500 at 1066 5,5,5,15 2t
evga 8800 gtx ko edition

voltages

vcore 1.43
vdimm 2.25
fsb 1.4
spp 1.5
mcp 1.3
spp < > mcp 1.4

i just started overclocking this summer. Got my rig locked in stable at 3.25 ghz. Then upgraded to win 7, and decided to up the OC a little to 3.33. Worked, stress tested sucessfully, thought i was done...

When I play games, notably crysis and dragon age, my on board realtek high definition audio drivers do not play nice with my overclock. After about 30 seconds I start to hear poping noises, then the sound cuts out completely after about 3 mins... and then "swwwwwiwshssshhshshshshs" it sounds like a plane is landing in my office. I'm serious i get this crazy garbled sound for about 10 seconds, and i have to lower the volume quickly to avoid blowing out the speakers (and my wife's ears). The sound eventually comes back up if i keep playing, but then the process repeats itself shortly after.

It sounds like graphical artifacts look... if that makes any sense.

This is really annoying. I've tried reverting to vista drivers, as well as the newest win 7 drivers. Muted every other audio device excpet the speakers, reduced the quality to 16 bit cd quality. The only thing that works is reverting to stock speeds and voltages in the bios.

I'd like someone to give some sugesstions about voltages. Specifically spp, mcp and spp <> mcp. Could that be the problem? are they to low, to high?

Alternatively the problem only happens in games. Which led me to believe it is a dx11 problem, since the realtek drivers only support dx10. but when I run media player or itunes with visualization, there are no problems at all with music playback. Nor are their any issues on the internet with flash videos or music.

I'd rather not have to buy a sound card but, i'd be willing to if i can't fix this problem.

Any ideas? If this isn't the approriate forum, let me know and I'll post in the intel mobo or cpu forum.

Thanks in advance for your time, much appreciated.

lol, i love it

right off the bat, your video card doesn't support dx11, just dx10. Not trying to be a smart-a**, just trying to clear any confusion.

is your OS 64 or 32bit? what sound card do you have? did you stress-test your ram? Also, are the spp, mcp, and spp to mcp voltages set to auto or user-defined? This info will help us do some troubleshooting.

If i remember correctly, your mobo has onboard sound. Try plugging speakers into motherboard and see if it comes back.

I had a similar problem with on board sound for about the last week or so.Went to Realtek website downloaded the latest driver's and it fixed it.

thanks for the replies.

win 7 premium 64 bit

heres a screenie of my dx diag. it says dx 11 on the bottom (highlighted) don't know why. I thought it was wierd too, but assumed it was correct. And hey, if your smart a** can help me solve this, let it be as smart as you want =)

I've got 4 gig of the reapers (2x2gig) had to change to a 2 dimm kit becuase overclocking on this board with all 4 slots populated proved to be completey f'ed. The ram passed memtest86 for about 17 passes. and like i said blend stable for 24 + and games don't crash nore bsod, just the audio disaster.

no sound card. its the onboard realtek high definition audio.

those voltages are user set. I'll try resetting them to auto tonight, but i don't know if its going to compromise my stability, cause I had to tweak them slightly to get it stable in the first place.

thanks again

dam, all of my solutions were based on having a sound card

The reason i ask about the smp and spp voltages is because your audio sounds like electricity building up (possibly because of a grounding issue, or electronic interference) and when the balance shifts, it is released through the speakers... in the form of a jet landing. But then we go back to the fact that no hardware changes happened, just an OS switch, that theroy kinda goes out the window.

about the directx 11: windows 7 comes with dx11 by default, and when your games or video card only use dx10.1 or less, dx10 is downloaded and used. The dxdiag is probably just reporting the latest dx installed, even when you only use dx9 and 10.

And like i said before, i know this only happened with an OS switch, but i think hardware is to blame. If you were to take your mobo out of the case and run it on a wood desk or cardboard box, and the crazy sound stopped, you might have a grounding problem with the case. The other option would be to rma it

In all honesty, i don't think taking the motherboard out of the case will help, but its the only reasonable test i can think of. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Thanks for the ideas. I do have wood floors in my apartment...

So if my mobo had a grounding problem, would the voltages of any of the components really matter. Isn't a ground fault in a circut a ground fault, stock voltages or overclocked? Wouldn't I be getting the audible artifacts w/o my oc? Same mobo mount right? Not trying to shoot down your theory, just trying to understand it better. The increased electrical interference does make sense though, (more voltage = more interference) cause these on-board sound solutions are noisy as hell w/ low decible static interference as it is. It's just that the "runway" effect only happens during games. So wierd.

Do you think a pci-e sound card would fix it, or make it worse? I mean, it would completely take the on-board sound processor out of the equation. I've read that although not competely slient, there is a lot less electrical interference over the audio signal when you switch to a sound card. Any sugestions on a good/not so expensive one?

Its just the damnest thing that it only occurs with the overclock, and only in games. So perplexing. Oh and just to mention i used the EXACT same settings tonight on all the bios options except for my vcore, vdimm, and FSB voltage. All the other settings are identical to my mobo's stock and stable [auto] reccomendations.

Thanks again for the help. I don't really need the oc to enjoy dragon age anyways. but crysis and GTA 4, those are horses of a different color.

Im not an electrical engineer by anymeans so your guess is as good as mine. But seeing as how it only happens when overclocked (pushing hardware past what the engineers deemed safe), and only when gaming (the highest overall system load), it would stand to reason that a defect/circut interuption would show its self then. Also, when not overclocked and/or gaming, less voltage and watts are running through the system, so perhaps the other components are able to dissapate the extra electricty. If anyone has more knowledge, please jump in, because im almost guessing at this point.

While a pci soundcard will not fix the problem, i think you wouldn't have any of the audio symptoms anymore because your GPU is run off the pci-e and it works just fine.
