You can pause it and assign things for your squad to do every 2 seconds or you can hope the AI is not being a total tosser and will know what to do. For me I had to spend a bit of my time in the Tactics screen for my chars. Setting up things like "If Caster is being hit by Melee cast glyph of repulsion on self" and "If Any Party member HP < 40% then use this Heal" Now I usually just control the Tank of the group gaining threat on enemies since I have three casters nuking the crap out of the pack of mobs. If you don't use the Tactics options some will be assigned automatically when you gain certain spells. But if you take a few mins tweaking them it makes combat a lot smoother. Before I was constantly pausing the combat to make sure my DPS Mage was not trying to melee ranged enemys or that my healer was blowing her mana on Arcane Bolting stuff. Also, the number of tactics you can assign is limited by the level of your tactics, which in turn is determined by the amount of Cunning you have.

Wall of Text Summary: Setup your tactics and you wont be constantly pausing the action.

Fun: Dungeon Crawling Combat is fun??
Intense: Simple trash isn't but big packs are, and bosses are a friggen nightmare even on Normal.
Fluid: See Wall of Text

Without any major plot spoilers, the game actually asks you to make some fairly difficult choices. Most of them are not black-and-white, either, and the game does a great job of presenting characters as complex personalities with motivations that are not always immediately evident (which is one of Bioware's strengths).

Bioware also takes some interesting role reversals on typical MMO play. The Elves in the game, for example, are not the high-society, absurdly wealthy artists that most high fantasy MMOs interpret them as. Mages and everyone else with a modicum of magical ability are treated with disdain and fear as opposed to being society's scholars and advisers.

Don't get me wrong: the game is still dark high fantasy. You will even recognize certain spells and abilities as having been lifted right from the pages of AD&D or Blizzard's lore. In fact there is nothing wrong with that, in my mind. Bioware spent more time and effort crafting a rich and engrossing story than trying to introduce new mechanics to the genre.

Eh I'm about 20% through the game at the moment. Maybe it changes later on. So far nothing that made me say "Ooh this is Dark and/or mature" maybe after playing a lot of "Dark" games over the years has jaded me a bit.
