First full build in almost 6 years

I'm not really looking at exact price atm, but I am eyeballing it and hoping to keep the rig under $1,200. Nothing's set in stone at all since I'm planning on buying after the holiday season (early January sounds like a good ETA for now).

Here's what I got so far (Newegg links for ease):
Case: Antec P183
Mobo: ASUS M4A79XTD
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 3.4GHz
RAM: G.Skill DDR3 1600 4GB (2x2GB)
VGA: Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB
PSU: Antec CP-850 850W

I think that would be a pretty solid system. I'll go with some Slipstream case fans (since I've been getting good performance out of the ones I have in my P182) but I have no idea what a good CPU or VGA cooler would be. I'm liking the numbers on my current Zalman VGA cooler (38C-45C core, 28C-32C ambient idle-load) but I'm not sure if it's the best way to go. Same goes for my CPU... in fact the numbers are pretty much the same, but you can subtract 2C from each on GPU to get those.

Looks good for me, the psu is a bit overkill for one card but will be nice in the future for an extra one.

It is. Absolutely no reason to get a 1000W PSU unless you're planning on something like 3-4 cards in SLI/Crossfire.

If you don't mind a MIR.. I'd take the Corsair 850W (same price after $20 MIR) over that one. Although that's still a nice one AFAIK.

That PSU is overkill. you could Use a 600w. I would go with the Corsair 650w.

What CPU cooler and HDD are you going to go with?

Looks like a pretty solid build to me, mate! Good to see you're future proofing with the PSU - Antec is a great brand but I can vouch for the Corsair 850W personally. Also, you will not need anything over 850W for that rig, trust me.

Also, the P183 is a gorgeous case - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time putting this build together. All the best!

How has it been 6 years...when Socket AM2 has been out only 3 years? Was released May 23, 2006. Sorry, just wondering is all.

And your build looks pretty good to me. I don't know much about the newer AM3 stuff though.

I think he means "full upgrade" as in, all parts at the same time. A whole new computer.

I'll think about goin with a Corsair PSU... had good experiences with them the last time I used one for a buddy's computer (oddly enough his name is Buddy). However, I want to keep the option to crossfire open, with plenty of power to spare.

For a CPU cooler, I'm leaning towards the Scythe Mugen. I'm gonna keep looking around, but I definitely don't want to have to do any lapping if I can help it.

For a hard drive, I'm thinking to keep it simple... maybe a pair of ~150GB WD hard drives in RAID0 with a third, larger drive for storage and (possibly) back-up (turning the HDD system into a RAID3 system)
