Repeated XP Install failure (BSODs). Help Troubleshooting. Plenty of data given

Alright, here's the latest .

I'm home for break and I immediately went to work on my PC.

Amazingly, it booted up perfect the first time I tried it. Considering the kagillion wires I have in that things, that's pretty incredible hah.

Just like last time, however, I have had problems. Here is what's happened. By the way, the rig is totally default... no overclocking.

Each time, I have formatted my 12GB OS partition. Every time, everything has performed perfectly up to the point that the windows installation screen is loaded.

The first time it got slower and slower and eventually gave me a BSOD after an hour.
The second time it gave me a BSOD after about a minute.
The third time, literally a second after the Windows XP installation screen pops up, it give me a BSOD.

Each BSOD is different.

Things I do not think it is:
PSU - OCZ Powerstream 600W. It absolutely should not be a power issue. After all, wouldn't it just crash instead of give me a BSOD?... I dunno.
CPU - It is a replacement of my other one that got pin rot. I carefully examined the bottom of the CPU and, except for a single pin that was slightly bent, it looked absolutely perfect.
Motherboard - I JUST got it back from RMA. It is a brand new replacement board. I got the latest BIOS revision from DFI's website just tonight and flashed it. (6/25/2005 if I remember correctly)
Video Card - I don't see any reason why it would be this... It's not like I've pushed it hard... and since when would a video card cause a BSOD in a Windows XP installation
IDE Cables - They are brand new and I've made sure that my OS partition is on primary master
RAM - I've got OCZ Platinum 4800 TCC5. It's currently at 200FSB... this RAM is tested at 300FSB. Not only that, it worked originally, before my first CPU got pin rot, and I've run a full cycle of memtest on it. Just to be safe, I'll let memtest run all night. I've tried it in both the orange and yellow slots. No luck.

Things it could possibly be:
The OS disk - I suppose it's possible. The scratches in it are very minute, but I suppose there is a slight possibility that the water I cleaned it with somehow messed up the CD, or that one scratch is messing something up. I don't think this is the problem though.
The DVD drive I'm loading the OS from - I only have one disk drive, and it is the DVDRW that I've painted black. My system has never worked properly since I have painted it black (but it was broken anyway). I'm thinking there is a very slight chance that somehow, when I painted it, the lense got scratched, or got paint dust on it, which is now ruining its ability to read data. Tomorrow, to test this, I will have my other computer running right next to this one, and hook the IDE into its DVD drive.

It could be a corruption with the Matser boot record..Format the MBR before next install...Also BE SURE if you are using DSL or Cable to not have that lan connection hooked up durring the install else you will get infected instantly.

Remove all un-needed hard ware..Exspecially any usb connected devices.

You may be having an issue where windows is putting some files on the other partition. If possible remove saved data on that partition and format the disk back into its origional size with 1 partition .. Then use a program lik ePartition magic to set up the secod partition . .

Could be the DVD as you suspect... borrow a drive from someone, if possible.

That happened to me once and it turned out to be one of my RAM sticks. I know you said that you don't think your RAM is the problem, but it can't hurt to check.

Use only 1 stick of RAM while installing XP, I had an issue similar to this. Use 1 stick to install, in either the yellow or orange slots, and you should be all set.

BURN! If I could kiss you.... I wouldn't. But I would give you a high five and a "HUUAAH!" I'm hoping that this is the only problem man. I got all the way through the install quickly with no BSODs. What do you think caused the problem?... Some weird problem with dual channel? Regardless, it works! Thank you so much! Assuming nothing else was causing the problems, I should be able to enter the mod contest now! I don't think that any RAM is bad becuase it passed 39 iterations of memtest, but hopefully it just comes down to some weird installation compatibility problem or some weirdness.

diehrd - thanks . I didn't have any USB devices and just basically sound card and video card. Thanks though

TheDuke - It appears we were wrong... thankfully! I didn't want to believe it was my beautiful black (That I painted myself) DVDRW, but I was running out of ideas.

Melcar - I haven't totally ruled that out yet . I guess we'll see what happens after I finish installing everything and stick it back in.

Chosen - I know your pain lol... I know your pain...

pjilietz - I mentioned that I'd already tried swapping from orange to yellow in my original post . Be careful to read entire posts. Details are vital!

Thank you all! Hopefully I won't have to post in this thread any more .

Heh...No kisses, please.
Anyway, really glad you got it to work. I had an issue with that beforehand, and I just used 1 stick of RAM. It didn't slow down teh installation at all because it doesn't use much RAM, only the CD > Hard drive transfers are in use.

Glad you got it worked out.

If Burn's sujestion doesnt work , then it may be your DVD drive. My DVD/cd burner hates cds now and I can only get the os to load up on my CD burner.
