External HDD dying?

Thread Starter
Hi OCN,

I have a Maxtor 500GB external HDD connected by USB that I use for backup, storage, etc. and recently it's been screwy. It won't play back a few video files, ex: in MPC it will say file not found, or Windows won't recognize the file at all. Those that do play back lag a lot and pixelate.

I've tried defragmenting the drive with Auslogics and Defraggler, as well as Chkdsk. I think I shouldn't have defragged, but what's causing this? I've kicked it over a few times by accident but it was still working.
THANKS, GUILT1!

You may only bump your thread once per 24 hours.

By the sounds of it, it sounds like your harddrive may be dying. I suggest you back up all contents on it ASAP.

Have you done a full sector scan with chkdsk? It doesn't do a full sector scan by default.

Well, I didn't want to start a new thread on the same thing, so here's some copy and pasta on what I'm experiencing now:

Quote:
Mmkay. I have a 500GB/160GB left Maxtor HDD, hooked up via USB directly to my motherboard. It's really slow in accessing files, and I have a ton of montages backed up to it as well.

Sometimes, when I want to play the montages, the video lags a ton. Also, my video of Incorporated 2 inexplicably disappeared one day.

Is my hard drive failing? I backed up my main HDD to it, and when I tried defragmenting, it wouldn't defragment.

I've also heard Maxtor has high failure rates. And I've kicked it over more than a few times by accident.

Is it making odd noises?
How old is it?
Why didn't it defragment? What did it say/do?
1) I don't think it did, HDD Health isn't showing it.

2) Yes, it sounds like a whir, and then it clicks.

3) I got it from my dad's office, not sure.

4) I used Defraggler and Auslogics Disk Defrag, after I tried to defrag it, it basically didn't show any progress after it was done.

It's a Maxtor OneTouch 500GB.

Ugh, after reading the reviews, it seems my situation is perfectly commonplace... DAMN YOU, SEAGATE/MAXTOR!!!
THANKS, GUILT1!

Yep, it's dead. If you really need to get something off it, you should try the freezer trick.

Pop the thing out of its enclosure, throw away the enclosure, and hookup the drive directly to a free SATA (or IDE, I forget) port. See if you can recover anything from it with testdisk/photorec.
