Asus V9570TD (FX5700) O/C Tips?

Hey guys, thought I'd register to the boards to hit you with this...

I've had this Asus card for a while now but I feel as if im not getting the best out of it... basically I want it to work to it's maximum capabilities.

Incase any of you are unfamiliar with the card, click here for the specs.

Can I "flash" this card, or "softmod" it to unlock extra goodies? How far can I push this card in terms of operating speeds? Will any software help? I've had RivaTuner installed on my comp for a while now but i havent had the bottle to mess around with it yet lol.

Here is the overall spec of my system:

Intel P4 2.6Ghz (478 Northwood)
1024mb DDR SDRam
120gb IDE HDD
Asus V9570TD agp gfx
Windows XP Pro.

Just a note about my mobo. I know it was made by Intel, but im not sure of the model. Either way, it only supports x4 AGP.

Any comments are appreciated. Cheers.

I went ahead and opened up Riva last night to mess around with the clock settings before I went to bed. I'll have another play later.

Anything else I can do?

They're isnt any pipes you can unlock for the 5700, srry to say, so the best you can do is overclock with Rivatuner or other programs such as Coolbits 2.0, AtiTool .25 beta 10, or Powerstrip.
Do benchmarks before and after each little overclock step, unusually increments of 3-5mhz for the core/memory, to see if overclocking is actually improving your gaming performance.
Aquamark 3, 3dmark01se, 3dmark03, and 3dmark05 are all great programs to run benchmarks through.

I don't think the 5700 has a temperature sensor, so the only way to tell if your card is overheating is if you notice artifacts while gaming or running benchmarks. If you see these artifacts, odd shapes and unusual color patterns or anything that seems not normal, then try to lower frequencies of your core or memory and try again.

If you want to increase overclockability of your core you can attach any sort of fan, 80mm or even a small 40mm, to your card's heatsink. Active cooling will always help. And for better memory overclockability, if you think your ram chips are heating up, buy some ramsinks (usually $10-15 newegg), copper or aluminum, to help take heat off those chips. These are just suggestions you can still get a good overclock without doing this.

Eventually you will find a good stable and artifact free setting that gives you the best results in benchmarks and gaming, so goodluck and happy overclocking.

Thanks for that.

Just fyi, it does have a sensor on it... the temp rarely ever hits above 50c (idle that is, the highest ive seen it on load is 62c).

The clock settings are currently at 520/610 and I still want to go higher. I haven't been artifacting in CS:Source, so I guess thats a good sign.

I was about to download ATi Tool to run the artifact test as I was beginning to overclock a little more, I want to be a precise as possible. The improvement so far has been noticable in CSS so im quite happy at the moment.

Thanks for the fan tip, though the fan on the card is, well, sorta, inside the heatsink itself, so im not quite sure what to do in that regard.

My 3DMark05 score after overclocking is around 700, which i know is poor, but at least its a decent improvement on the 300 i was getting previously (yes, 300..)

Anyway, thanks again for that, im just gonna keep messing around until i get something a little bit better.

Hi i think you would really get better card performance with a new mobo, there some cheap mobos out there that would fit your cpu and ram, your card works best at AGP 8X speeds but at the moment your really choking it at 4X, i have a Abit VT7 mobo, THIS would really help you

Do you think its worth getting one of these along with some AS5? It'd only set me back about £15 for both at the most id imagine...

Sorry for the double post, but I want to ask a newbie question.

Is heat the direct cause of artifacting? Is that why better cooling allows you to overclock higher?

Most cases it is but after a certain point, voltage becomes a factor, because the card needs more voltage to achieve higher, artifact free, core/mem overclocks. Once this happens, try searching for vmods for your card, but perform vmods at your own risk because they can be dangerous and fatal to the card, but sometimes can yield incredible results.
