Powercolor 5850 unlocked and overclocked - Page 2

Did you only OC with CCC?

Damn it all...looks like I might be returning mine. It is an Asus 5850, but it won't OC worth a darn. A huge 775 core and 1050 on the memory. I was going to be looking at trying to increase the voltages a little to see if it helps, but if you got that far by just using CCC then I should probably just forget it.

Think I can fool that MSI software to work on my Asus? Or is there an Asus made equivalient that I missed? I haven't had time to mess with it yet.

What is CCC? What is this thread talking about? I might buy a 5850 and which brand should I buy?

CCC is the Catalyst Control Center. It's the configuration software for ATI graphics cards. The ATi equivilent to Nvidia's Control Panel.

It allows for overclocking as well. Though sometimes people get better results with third party software like RivaTuner

Okay, then what's all with this "Unlock" thing? What does it unlocks? Is there any risk?

It unlocks your OC potential and yes there is a risk if you push your card too hard

Well...the unlock means that you can change the voltage of the card and that CCC will allow you to move the core frequency slider to a higher number...doesn't mean it will work though. I can move mine all the to 1200MHz but it isn't stable beyond 775MHz. That's why I need to learn what software is available for me to play with the voltages a little.

There is risk that I will damage my card with too much voltage or the heat from the extra volts will cause it to over heat, but that is part of overclocking. It's a risk I take with pleasure.

Unlocking is just flashing the bios of a graphics card that has a restricted overclock with the bios of a card that doesnt have as low of constraints of overclocking. for the 5850's ASUS and MSI have limits of 1200/1400 core/mem where every other card at this moment is limited to 775/1125. It just gives you more room to overclock your card.

ATI's graphics control center. And as for what 5850 card you should buy, whatever one you can actually get a hold of xD they all seem to perform the same from what I've seen. If you dont want to flash bios on your card to unlock get an ASUS or MSI. If you're looking for warrenty, XFX has a double lifetime warrenty.

I wouldnt return your card, my stock voltage was 1035 mV (1.035V) and I've been using MSI afterburner to increase voltage and clock speeds. Im at 1.225V to keep 900/1200 perfectly stable. Tried 1.25V for 1Ghz core bit it didnt like that

Forgot you for a sec, the risk is that if the bios doesnt flash correctly you will need another graphics card in your first PCIe slot to flash the card back to it's original bios, because your incorrectly flashed one wont work Scary yes, but it was actually very simple with the steps that someone listed back on the first page. I used the asus.rom file listed with it and it works perfectly fine.
