Hey guys,

I want to get a 7800gtx, but with all these brands and opposing statements i don't know which brand will give me the best overclockability

so which is it, XFX? Leadtech? BFG? ASUS? etc...

which one is known for best overclockability.

and can you get a 7800gt and unlock it to be a GTX??

thanks for any help guys!

Can't unlock a 7800GT to a GTX, sorry. I think both the red and green teams have caught on to the unlocking act, and have taken measures to prevent it from here on out.

As far as overclockability, I can tell you my XFX will go faster without artifacting than my ASUS will, so I'd go with XFX between those two.
Heard good things about the eVGA's also, they have a different cooler than everybody else, so if I had it do do again, I would check them out.

I've heard lots of good things about both xfx and evga. I'm happy w/ my evga 7800GT CO. evga puts better coolers on most of their cards which helps with OCs. they also cover overclocking and changing the cooler in their warranty. so if you're considering one or both of those evga might be the way to go.
oh, and evga and xfx both offer lifetime warranty. xfx's is double lifetime so if you sell the card to someone else they'll get it... evga's covers ocing' and changing the cooler and they have a step up program so if you buy a 7800GTX and nvidia comes out w/ a better card within 3 mo. you can send your card in and just pay the difference to get the new card.

ive had the evga, temp, i borrowed it from work and ive got a XFX 7800gtx, im currentlly running 525/1.35 i have some liquid metal compound i got from ebay, aswell, im running 57* idle on stock hsf, whilst the evga when i had it would crap out around 490/1.32, on ym xfx i have not volt modded it at all, either

my personal choice would be the XFX 7800gtx oc it comes pre-clocked at 490 with head room for more overclocking

I don't like my xfx so much. I could hardly overclock it at all without getting artifacts. Only after removing the stock fan and replacing it with a home made 80mm-fan-and-wind-tunnel was I able to get it to 495/1500 (450/1300 stock). If I could have, I would have gone for a BFG, but they don't sell them here.

hmm.. i'm planning to water cool the 7800gtx... as i'm also water cooling my cpu.. so far it seems xfx is goign to be the way...

how can the 7800gtx be better for overclocking? if it is just an overclocked 7800gtx.. wouldn't a standard one be better for o/c'ing as it hasn't been tampered with?? or is it that the OC versions are pre volt modded or something?

They all use identical PCB don't they? So there shouldn't be any difference in OC
