New 3700+ San Diego temp question. HELP!

Thread Starter
Hey, y'all.
I just built a system with an Athlon 64 3700+ SD. I JUST mounted my Zalman CNPS9500 using AS5 and my current UNOVERCLOCKED idle temp is 30C.

Does this seem like a normal idle temperature before the AS5 is broken in?

I have extremely low airflow restriction from the front of the case as I don't have any drives mounted in front of the Zalman http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811196011

though I don't have an intake fan blowning air to the heatsink. My nForce4 Ultra chip is idling at 28C thanks to my mounting of an intake fan directly in front of my Blue Ice 2 chipset cooler.

I understand that these SD cores are supposed to be cool. Should I re-seat the Zalman and go for lower immediate temps???

THANKS guys. OVERCLOCK.net RULES.

San Diego chips run a little hotter than Venice chips. My 3700+ runs 3*C hotter than my 3000+. Load temps. are what count. Run something like PRIME for a few hours. The temperature should not go beyond 40*C with the setup you have. As for the chipset, unless your motherboard displays the actual chipset temp. and NOT the system temp. you really can't tell what the temp. on the chipset is, unless you have your own temperature probe installed. I wouldn't worry too much about it, since the NF4 chip can take up to 75*C.

Like Melcar said, idle temps really don't mean much. Unless for some reason you don't like them. But anyways, get some 100% CPU usage on that and get back to us with the results. Good luck on overclocking! (if you want to)

Thanks guys. Right now my load temps are about 38C after a few hours of prime95 (5 hours). Thanks for setting me straight on the relative insignificance of idle temps. My "motherboard temp" with Asus PC Probe never gets past 29C. I thought this was my chipset temperature, though I could be wrong.

So I guess I should be asking if 38C (up from 30) is too hot of a load temperature for a stock frequency 3700+ SD with freshly installed cooling as described above. It seems really high to me. Maybe it'll come down over more time?

That's not high. Most would give their left nut to have those temps Keep it under 55 Celsius and you're peachy

You really think so even for stock voltage? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! So the max generally observed is 55, not 40? I'm having a hard time finding some data on load temps of other users.

THANKS!!!

My load temps. at stock settings was about 37*C if I remember correctly. After I overclocked and raised the vcore all the way to 1.7V it went to 40-42*C. However, I have a SI-120 with a 110CFM fan running at full blast. As long as load temps. are below 55*C (50*C even better) you are good.

For day to day gaming, I run my 3700 at 2.76 ghz and my max temps are 43 Celsius, but only about 40 from games. It'll hit 43 or so when running something harder like Prime95. Anything under 55 is fine, 50 is even better. Anything under that just means you can turn up the voltage more and clock higher

Great info, man! I want to overclock a little but first I want to find out how much cooling my fans will do at virtually inaudible volt settings. Once I know my sinks are workin' right and my cooling is the quietest it can be THEN I'll push the clock.

My Zalman is still plugged into the mobo so the q-fan or cool'n'quiet thing is upping the fan speed on its own (even on load the fan stays extremely quiet). I will eventually install a controller for all of my fans so I can run a TON of them at silent speeds. Once all this is in place I want to push the system a little.

This rig has to be inaudible at a few feet as it will be used for audio recording in a few months.

If anyone has any other cooling/temperature tips I would LOVE them.
