There is a tendency to propose that people contribute to charities because of the diseases they are focused on... and the people who have suffered from these diseases. While this makes perfect sense, I'd like to suggest that there's another way to decide which charity to support. Instead of directing funding to a specific disease, it would be wise to go one step further...

Looking into the specific "funding target" for a charity is the key to having your money be the most productive. This requires a bit more work, however the bottom line is that YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOUR HARD-EARNED DOLLARS ARE INVESTED IN THE RIGHT ORGANIZATION. The key here is to be sure that the charity supports the best scientific research for the disease you're interested in helping.

I suggest that you take a look at the National Institute of Health and see if your charity supports one of the 23 research institutes. That is the best way to truly give a helping hand for finding a cure... no matter what the disease!
