I think you are only affected if you overclock. I'm sure the cards are perfectly stable at the speeds ATI released them at.

If you noticed, there was a therad about a overclocked 5970 coming out and the overclock was so minor. They probbaly did some testing and that's all they could get stable so yeah if you are talking about new overclocked 5970s cards, then yes they probably will need a better cooler or a WB.

I have no idea, however the guy has no mention of his source, and could easily have interpreted things differently (possibly incorrectly) when reading through say the 5970 white sheet.

It's going to come to a point where the manufactures are going to have to undervolt/underclock their cards in order to stay within the 300W threshold/stay within the thermal threshold of the card. This will be counterproductive, and there will be little performance increases from one generation to the next. If this trend continues, new technology will = more heat, meaning the rate of new technologies will be proportional to underclocking/undervolting.

Of course I'm generalising and out on a leap, but think about it: our MAINSTREAM cooling technology has not caught up with our mainstream performance. So either we will need a revolutionary aircooling technology on these cards, a standardization of watercooling, or continuation of downclocking to avoid these ridiculous temperatures.

They will just require PCI-E 2.0, or 3.0 when it comes out. If they required 2.0 on this card, there wouldn't be any issues and could of shipped the card @ 825/1200..

Anyone buying a $600 GPU is probably on PCI-E 2.0 anyway.

You are incorrect actually. As history would tell us, the 9800GX2 was basically two 9800gtxs sandwiched together and underclocked a bit, and I didn't see hordes of OCN people complaining about it.

You are absolutely right...but if they did require 2.0 and slapped on those 5870 speeds, those extra 75 watts will account for more heat. And after reading this thread, the last thing this card needs is more heat unless you want your speeds throttled.

You are right. What I get from this article is that it's a heat issue causing the card to throttle. It just needs better cooling.

No, you flat out said that people here are OK with the underclocking of ATi cards, but they wouldn't be OK if Nvidia did it. And as I pointed out, you're wrong. And the topic at hand in this thread is "overclocking problems" with ATi cards, so talking about the results of what happened when Nvidia did the same thing is directly related.
