core i5 750 or core i7 920 ???

Thread Starter
hello all...

I have a quick question regarding which one to get from these 2 processors: core i5 750 (2.66 GHz) or core i7 920 (2.66 GHz)?

I am confused since the 2 ones seem to be similar to each other except for that the core i5 has no HT, while the i7 does have, but on the other hand... the Core i5 memory controller 1333, while the Core i7 is only 1066, and not to mention that the Core i5 has the Turbo technology while the Core i7 has not.
so I need your help in this, I need to know:
1- which one of these 2 CPUs would be faster on stock speed.

2- which one would overclock higher?

3- both would be with at least 6 GB DDR3 so which one is best ?

for sure I am going to replace the board with some one that fits them and I think it is more likely to be the Asus P5p43td pro

so now what do you say please ???

which one.... which one ?

thank you all

IIRC, the main upsides of i7 are triple channel and HT. I've seen both i5s and i7s go up to 4GHz a lot, but I'd surmise from the number of 5GHz i7 clocks I've seen that the i7 is the one to go for for OCing.

From what I've heard the i5 actually beats the i7 in SOME categories, but by only a few % / points.

In memory intensive tasks the i7 will still prevail.

1. Clock for clock I think the i7 will still come on top
2. I haven't seen i5 clocks but I know most of the new i7s can get 4.0-4.5GHz with low volts.\\

EDIT: The board you said you will most likely get won't be compatible with either of those CPUs.

If you're on a budget think about this, a decent i7 board is $200++ while a decent i5 board is only <$200.

Gaming wise, go i5. If you need HT, go i7. I would save the money though and get the i5. Dual channel RAM is still a lot cheaper than tri-channel and so are the P55 motherboards. It all adds up.

1- which one of these 2 CPUs would be faster on stock speed.

i7 will be faster in environments that actually use the multi-threading. Otherwise they're prob. comparable. It depends what you're doing.

2- which one would overclock higher?

Either or.

3- both would be with at least 6 GB DDR3 so which one is best ?

???

It's a lot easier to help you decide which is best for you if you can describe the primary things you'll be using the machine for.

so what about that i7 memory controller is only 1066, while i5 is 1333 ???

how much does that make difference ?

and how much the extra one memory channel makes difference over the core i5 that lacks it ?

The extra memory channel makes a good difference, a larger amount of bandwidth for sure.

It should be a little noticeable in tasks that need the extra memory band.

Depending on what you mean by 'intensive video stuff', I'd say go i7.
