Help, Transferring OS

Thread Starter
Hello, I've recently started getting the S.M.A.R.T. alert on startup, so figured it's time to go to a new HD. It was time anyways (been using the same 40 gig for 4 years), so I'm going to the Seagate 200 gig (on sale at Best Buy for $50). My problem is, my copy of XP is upgrade only. I don't have the original Millenium CD anymore :-(. Can I copy my current install of XP to the new hard drive?
Thanks,
-Sam

Ironically enough, I saw that yesterday as I was walking through. It's not a bad hard drive, make sure you get the mail in rebate out quick though.

Anyways, you can't use the upgrade disk on a fresh hard drive. I'm not even certain that you can cut and paste an entire hard drive's contents, esp. Windows, as it's got a special place where it stores all its boot information. I would wait on a specific answer as to cutting and pasting your Widows folder, but I can give you one certain answer, that you can't use an XP Upgrade Disk on a fresh hard drive without having Windows pre-installed on it first. What I would suggest you do is ask to borrow a buddy's XP or 2000 install disk and install it. Don't activate Windows. Use your upgrade disk to install Windows over the 2000 or ME installation, and activate XP.

The way I did it was use a little program called VolumeID and you can change the Volume ID of the new drive to match that of your old drive. I'll have to look around for it, but it seems like it came from MajorGeeks.com but don't hold me to that. I had to do it because I had a tiny 10 gig drive and already had XP on it as an upgrade, and I bought a 120 gig drive.
Edit; here is the link for it.

as long as you have a windows xp code, you should be able to clean install fine with a full windows xp disc without doing the upgrade thing.

Microsoft cares only that you are trying to be honest about the installation process. You've already given them the money for the XP system you now run, so they shouldn't have any issue with you installing it again...just fromatted with a different disc.

volumeID sounds crafts and yet worrysome....I would imagine that the boot sectors won't get transfered if you copy just the windows folder...you mean to copy the entire HD right?

I don't really care about copying the entire hard drive, I just reformatted and reinstalled a few days ago, and haven't put much back on it. I only need to copy the install of the OS.
