GeForce 6800 GT or Sapphire X800 GTO2 mod to X850 XT?

Thread Starter
I am planning on building a new computer and having trouble making up my mind about which video card to buy. The motherboard will be DFI LANParty UT nF4 SLi-D. If i buy the 6800 (~$260) then i can buy another 6800 latter down the road to run SLI. On the other hand i can get the Sapphire X800 GTO2 (~$260 too) and mod it to X850 XT. I think the X850 XT will out performance the 6800 but i am unable to find any review to confirm this.

CrossFire motherboards are still new and expensive plus the CF technology is not perfect yet. I am not sure what to decide....going crazy debating my self. Hopefully you guys can give me some good advises. What should i do? which video card to get???

Thanks in advance.

I have an unloked GTO2 that overclocked past XT speeds. I upgraded from a 6800NU and performance has never been better.

Yep, unlocked my GTO² as well. I can play NFS: MW with everything jacked up with 4x AF and 16x AA with 30-35 FPS...That's with moderate overclocking.

I would go with the gto2, flashing it to an x850xtpe would deliver great performance. I run an x850xtpe and can run most games with high to very high settings. If you really want to run SLI then I would go with 2 7800gt's($40 more each than 6800's), you can buy one now and one later on maybe. Although I don't belive SLI yields enough performance gain to justify the money, just my opinion.

This is a tough one... If you want speed over detail in future and some current games, go with the GTO II. But, if you dont mind being a couple of FPS behind, and don't mind paying a little more for better image quality, go with the 6800 GT. I replaced my x850 XTPE with a 6800 GT, and my AM3 score dropped 3k (from 69K with my XTPE), but I notice that the image quality on the 6800 GT is a good amount better than my x850. I can also play games with HDR and get about 2x higher FPS on my 6800 GT with HDR enabled compared to HDR enabled on my x850 XTPE. So it is really all a matter of budget, and prefrence.

i am suprised to hear that the 6800 GT is better than the X850 XTPE. I do agree with Mangimar about SLI prices. I am not critical on graphic quality because i cant tell the different between 50 fps and 60 fps lol. Probably will to with the GTO2 card since i get the most bang for my buck.

Melcar: what's the clock speed on the card? what cooling solution did you use?

Thanks guys for your inputs. More is welcome too

Based purely on a single card, I'd get the x800GTO2 as it will slightly outperform the 6800. As Waxshop has said, the nvidia has SM3, but personally I never noticed this when switching from ATI to Nvidia (play games too fast to notice slightly improved textures etc).

However, as you are getting an SLI board, I think that the nvidia option is the way to go as then you have the option of adding another card without having to change your mobo.

If you do decide to go this route, make sure you get a nice PSU now or this will need to be upgraded when you do SLI. OCZ Powerstream 520W is the recommended choice from DFI Street for a DFI nF4 board and will handle 2 6800GS cards. Also good PSUs are the Seasonic 500W and the Sunbeam Nuuo.

Why did you get a lower card
