Here is my experience on finding a quiet Crossfire cooling solution for my Gigabyte Radeon HD 5770 (GV-R577UD-1GD) cards.

Here are the cards in question, not quite reference design if I remember correctly as the GPU is further from the DVI ports than the original 5770's:

A close up of the stock 1989 Batmobile cooler:

And here is a close up of the bare card:

I ran a quick test after finishing my latest build and saw that the inside 5770 hit 100°C and kept climbing when maxing out the Unigine Heaven benchmark.

After a minute or two of those types of temperatures making sure it wasn't some sort of mistake I took out one of the cards and ran a single card until my cooling solution showed up in the mail on Friday:

A pair of Arctic Cooling Accelero 1 Rev. 2 coolers.

Despite not listing the 5770 as being supported I had a pretty good idea that I could make them work one way or another, anything had to work better than the fugly stock Batmobile cooler.

The single card with the stock cooling idles around 40°C and hits 70°C under load, with two cards in Crossfire using stock cooling they idled at 65°C and under load as stated it shot up to the 100°C range as noted above.

I got rid of the plastic junk attached to the cooler to start:

And then lapped the surface of the inside cooler, this is not an easy cooler to lap. I then cut the coolers down by around 1cm in order to fit nicely into my unique non standard ATX setup, I took my time with a pair of shears and got some pretty good results. I sanded the cut end of the fins (not shown) to get rid of any sharp edges or potential metal splinters or fragments (not going to risk any short circuits).

I cut and sanded the VRM sinks to size and started putting both cards together.

Something important to point out: If you use the stock spacers that come with the cooler there will be a 1-2mm gap between the cooler's base and the GPU die as seen in the image below.

This will likely give you a bricked card if you try to run it like this, so I made some smaller spacers out of PVC tubing and was good to go (Stock on the left, homemade on the right).

And here they are ready to go.

As for temps I have great results . With an ambient temperature of 21°C my Crossfire load temps have gone from 100°C down to 51°C, and the idle temps have gone from 65°C to a very friendly 31°C. And I eliminated two 80mm fans worth of noise and energy usage in this mod, I am damn happy with this setup now

Now to see what kind of overclock I can get out of these cards

I should do something like this, with 4 120mm fans pulling air into the case, I'm sure that air cooling my 5770 would provide some great benefits.

Never heard of such a difference. Crazy .. I'll reread this guide a few times and consider purchasing them. I"ll have to measure to make sure it fits!

I have a PCI sound card between the two

Love the clean look, Photograph.

I just purchased a second 5770 (Sapphire VaporX) to accompany my Asus (CuCore), and am worried about temperature problems that may arise when I install. I might end up trying this out if the cards get too warm.

If I didn't go all out and replace the whole cooler, and just added VRM sinks, do you think noticeable differences could be had?

Those things you had to change, are they easy to find, what they can be replaced with? Because that I see is the only impediment for using this cooler with the 5770. Where should i find those, what do you recommend?

The Gigabyte cooler is very similar to the Asus CuCore, that would be the card I would mod of your two. As for adding ramsinks you likely don't have enough room under the Asus cooler to add any to that side of the card from what I can see. Ramsinks are great but they don't do much of anything to help keep core temperatures down. Plus a pack of Ramsinks like Enzotech is around $15, the whole Accelero 1 is around $22 with ramsinks and VRM sinks for your MOSFETS.

I just made a new smaller set of washers out of vinyl tubing from Rona (Home Depot, Lowes etc. will carry it), I use it a lot to make non-conductive spacers and washers, it's easy to cut to size and dirt cheap.:

1000Mhzz @ 1.35V Idles at 45ish and stress loaded at 90 with a typical game usage load it did 65-70.

So it works but u need a better fan and no airflow restrictions.

I personally would prefer near 30 idle and 60 under stress load.

Under these uncommon circumstances it barely matched the stock cooler. So just imagine it crammed in a case...

For single egg type 5770's I would just get proper case fan configuration and pull the shroud off. After doing this I run at 1000/1400 and load at 61-65 with ambient temps in the lower 20's. Idle at 31-35.

Before upgrading to the Antec 300 and having a crappy a case with cheapo 80mm fans memory would only go to 1350. I have the fan at 55 so it's pretty silent as well.

I'm going to add some Ram sinks and a 120mm fan blowing right onto the GPU(side of case)next week and expect it to get even better.

Does it fit perfectly without any modifications? I ask this because i can go and pick one up today for my Asus CuCore 5770. At the moment i can'thit 1ghz GPU.

I await your reply.
