Immediate HELP Please!!!

I had a random shut down of my rig and now the bios is saying that my S.M.A.R.T Status of my HDD is bad and that failure may be iminent. How reliable is the S.M.A.R.T monitoring for HDD's? Should be worried? This drive is about 4 years old. Shouls I trust it? What should I do?

I did some searching, and I came accross this post:

I would heed the advice mentioned in there, and I would also download this utility from Hitachi:

**BACK UP YOUR INFORMATION BEFORE RUNNING THIS APPLICATION**

The reason being is it assses the fitness of your hard drive by running a battery of tests. If it was true indeed that your HD was about to fail, this program would make it. If you hard drive is in good shape then there would be nothing to worry about. This could also be true by running MS scandisk, or defrag as well. So don't think this is specific to this program. Tell us what you find after running DFT.

thanks for the quick help. I will start backing up my data and run that test and let you know what happens. It will take a while though.
