*Official* ATi Radeon HD 59xx Series Owners Club - Page 136

Im glad you didnt take my comment the wrong way as i genuinely would like to know this for sure as im buying a 5970 in next few weeks and did plan block it and clock it@1ghz like my 5870 whic did require a bump in vcore.

I think i will have a search around before i make any major voltage changes, like you say its up to the owner of the card.

I wonder if those voltages were quoted in light of heat that could be handled by stock cooler? more vcore, more heat output.

I know that the VRM on my card would get extremely hot after hours of gaming were it not for my waterblock.

well, since when do us overclockers strictly adhere to a completely safe level of anything?

my two particular 5970s will do 950/1250 at 1.174v core and 1.15v memory

but i do actually believe the 5970 has 3 phases for the core instead of the full 4 on a 5870. but don't quote me on that.

"NEW" XFX5970BE BIOS
(solves cold bug issues)

Bios/date/time : 07/13/10 23:35
Bios Version : 113-HD5970-104 Master
Bios Version : 113-HD5970-105 Slave

I discovered it accidentally in this thread from a user Plug2k (thank you) who had this bios pre-installed in his card.

A friend of mine from ATI examined the bios and compared it to the sapphire oc one. He said that this new XFX bios in opposition to the old XFX one (found in xfx site) has many similarities with the sapphire oc bios, has more tight memory timings than the sapphire bios, but still believes that the sapphire oc bios is more complete.

If you read through the above mentioned thread you will see that also this new XFX bios SOLVES the COLD BUG issues.

Lets see when/if XFX will decide to make it available public.

Think if you have the stock cooler on the 5970 and using the voltage i'm using isn't a smart idea. But i think its oke with an AC Xtreme, load temps are 62/66 on both cores after 1 hour of metro 2033 and fan speed still on stock. Ofc its possible to kill the card but thats with all the hardware the same if you pushing it to the max. My advice is keep the vcore around 1.100/1.300 with the stock cooler.

There are some cards that under a specific temp cause 2d artifacts, so in order for them to work properly they have to be above a temp threshold.

This does not happen only in watercooled cards but also in fast boot up PCs with SSDs (like my case) were there is no sufficient time for the card to warm up causing 2d artifacts for a few secs after windows login.

In my case and before I solved this issue with the sapphire bios I had problems exactly when the cores were at 36C. Above or below that temp everything was normal.
