I'm paying 380 for the card. Yes my ultimate goal is to get 2 more monitors for eyefinity.

Someone please confirm that 380$ is a good price for an asus 5970. Im having my doubts about buying it. What else would be a better upgrade instead?

Buy it and trifire with your current 5870, it's a good buy.

Also your psu is more then enough to do it too. Although a 5970 might need a 16x 2.0 slot to function.

Okay. Yah I was going to put the 5970 in the first pci slot which is the x16 and move the 5870 in the x8.
If all else fails, i can just sell my 5870 and still have better performance.

Do I have to worry about lowering the clocks on the 5870? What drivers have been working good?

I've just sold my 5870 recently. I had it going in trifire with my 5970. The 5870 was running stock 850/1200 and I can say there was no microstuttering whatsover.

If you can, you can run your 5970 with 850/1200 with MSI AfterBurner ( to up your 5970 voltage a tad )software or do a bios mod which I did.

I modded the bios of my 5970 with more voltage and higher clocks so I didn't need software to overclock.

Made it easier. But now I just leave my 5970 stock because it's quieter and cooler, and also runs everything game I play right now.

Even with the release of the refresh, at $380, the HD5970 is a phenomenal deal! I bought mine for $500 only about 2 months ago so the savings you got of $120 is damn good in its own right. Since you are getting two more monitors then the value of your purchase is even more worthwhile as the money saved can go towards the monitors.

The suggestion above to Tri-Fire your cards isn't bad either with a working Eyefinity setup. The only thing to keep in mind is that you will be pushing the upper limits of your power supply - especially if you plan on overclocking the video cards on top of your CPU. I would be more comfortable with a strong 850W or 1000W PSU depending on how hard you plan on pushing your system.

Other than that, it's like I said, you scored a great deal on the single fastest card currently available (regardless of how many GPU's are on there). Celebrate and enjoy!

About the psu comment.

I've had two 5970s in crossfireX with a 4Ghz Phenom quad back in April. It all ran fine on my current psu.

The Toughpowers Series is still a great psu and 750w is more than enough for crossfiring a 5970 and 5870 together.

Yah I was figuring, I can buy a used 5870 for 300ish or just 2 of them for 80$ more I wish I would have gotten a more popular monitor so its easier to get multiples of one. Oh well
I currently dont have my cpu OC'd at all, just the 4th core unlocked. And considering I wouldnt need to OC the gpus at all with my single monitor I will be fine for the PSU.

So correct me: the 5970 and 5870 need to have the same clocks? Or does it matter if the 5970 runs stock and the 870 stock too? Dont think I would feel comfortable doing a bios mod, too afraid of screwing something up.
But thanks guys!

No. you can have both the 5870 and 5970 at stock clocks for crossfireX action.

You don't need to sync the clocks up.

While I agree it will run, I don't think it is ideal. Everybody's configuration is different - plus you have a higher rated power supply running your setup. If he has a bunch of hard drives, optical drives, fans, lights, and whatever else, that all factors in. Not to mention the disparity in voltage needed to maintain his stable overclock and unlock on the CPU. And this is before the voltage bump needed to overclock the 5970 to 5870 clock speeds.

Again, I'm not disagreeing that the system will run on that Tough Power. I just think it's better to err on the side of caution since running the power supply at near max capacities can spell aging and replacing a lot sooner than necessary.

Just my $0.02.

I got the card just now. First thing I notice for requirements: "At least 600W power supply" Umm.. if it runs at that wattage then I do need probably a 1000W. Kinda worried now.

So some people say itll run with my psu, others dont. I dont have my cpu overclocked though, non of my system is at the moment.

What drivers are running best with the 5970?
