SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - Seagate Technology, which makes computer hard drives used to store data, said Wednesday it agreed to acquire rival Maxtor Corp. for about $1.9 billion in stock.

Under the terms of the agreement, Maxtor shareholders will receive .37 shares of Seagate common stock for each Maxtor share they own. Based on Seagate’s closing stock price on Tuesday, the deal values each Maxtor share at about $7.25, a 60 percent premium to Maxtor’s Tuesday closing price of $4.52 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Indeed, I have a Hitachi SATA that I just got a week ago and I'm in love with it. And I have a Maxtor ATA133, it's ok, but it seems really slow to me now.

This may explain why maxtor drives have gotten so cheap lately.

Haha, I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB drive and a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 (not the 10 with 16MB cache ) 200GB. The Maxtor is only my storage drive and they are SATA150 but IF they were ATA133, the Maxtor would be the Seagate's slave, lol. Kinda ironic.

As long as the price goes down, the quality goes up, I personally don't care who owns who. Heck, if they make it cheap enough, I don't care if they put a Michael Jackson sticker on each drive!

I've owned 2 Maxtors and they both broke. Hopefully, Seagate will either cancel the production of all Maxtors or bring them up to Seagate's standards. Either way, this is a good thing for the consumer. Yay!
