Placing Hard Drives

Thread Starter
Quick question...should the front intake fans blow onto hard drives with there being not slot between the two hard drives I have? Or, should I place the two hard drives above the fan with no gap between?

so heres diagram...sorry for the sucky drawings...hope you get the concept...I do have enough slots to put the hard drives one on top the other above the fan

Which is better 1st or second?

Will the hard drives get too hot?

So exactly how important is HDD heat? I've got mine set up like the second example, and I'm wondering how much longer the drives will last when cooled like the first one...

I don't really know, typical MBTF is 50,000 hours, which is more than you'll ever have. So, keeping a fan onto it will increase it by some, but I don't know for certain how much. I would still suggest you get a fan on them.

alright everyone....seems like the consensus is fan blows onto them...

Heat is really that big of a factor?

Well it more of a factor as an intake for the rest of the system rather than the HDDs, i wouldnt look at having the front fan to cool the HDDs but rather getting cooler air into the case

But the heat generated from having the hdd's on top of each other won't affect their lifespan?

This computer will last me the next 5 years....seriously lol I'm not gonna upgrade this thing once I'm in college.

Yeah BUT what about this the cool air from the fans blows over the hot HDD's and keeps goin over them and just pushes warm air into the rest of the computers guts, right? So it really depends if you wanna keep your HDD's cool or keep the insides nice and cool... (sorry if I'm wrong but I think differently hehe)

Yes it will matter, added heat may or may not decrease its lifespan, but I don't know if it will, and if so, by how much.

I put a 80mm fan over my harddrive and it cools it pretty good. It doesn't blow air onto the hd but more like stucking the hot air that rises.
