I tend to lean towards windows myself mostly because I use my comp mostly for gamming.
I do not believe that linux has some advantage when it comes to malware and viruses, the thing is people write viruses and other malware targeting Windows and a majority of people use windows. So when there is some virus problem comes along millions of people get it and everyone gets the mass emails about it. When linux gets a virus linux users being a much smaller crowd do not get the same attention.
linux does have virus's, wherever the myth came from it doesn't, i'm not sure.
when most say "linux can't get virus's" i think it is just a misuse of words, it should be "a linux virus is unlikely to cause much damage", a lot of it has to do with how linux gives our permissions and grants privileges, as long as you are not doing something serious stupid like running as root if you get a virus in linux, the most it could do is wreck your home folder...
If someone could convince me that Linux was actually a better alternative to windows i would switch over right away. As it stands right now all i really hear from the linux crowd is
1. It is free
2. If you get _____ then you can run the same thing windows runs
3. It is not windows
I never really hear an objective reason why a gamer like myself would switch over. I know linux has wine and that helps run some games, but when why go through all the trouble of trying to get a linux computer to do things a Windows computer can do?
but better is subjective, it has no real meaning, i can give you the reasons i think it is better, then 10 different people can give you more and different from mine and even to each's other as to why it is better, and then some windows fanboy will come along and say something like "but can it run crysis" and then some other fanboy will come along and be like "this is why windows is better, cause it can", it is a viscous circle, and it doesn't change, so no point in bothering trying to convert the world, it only matters to help the ones who want to embrace a new world.
so stick with virus scanners, directx, games, "technical support" and all that jazz, linux isn't for you.
|If linux was really that much better wouldn't the windows people be pumping out programs to run linux applications and games on their computer?|
