My first system...Tips appreciated!

Thread Starter
Hello! I'm so excited this is my first build! I've always just bought my comps at futureshop so I will be the first to admit that i'm a noob...but we must all start somewhere. This is a great site and I've been reading it for 4 days straight. Here we go.

I want to build a budget system for less than $1000
I have never overclocked before but I would like something that gives me that option in the future...i'm so curious about it!

So far the only thing I have ordered is my AMD 3700+ San Diego Core $296 Canadian

Question #1

I need help with what motherboard to get there are so many lol!

I do NOT need SLI
Needs to take dual channel ram
I would like to have firewire for my digital camcorder
simple bios would be nice for my first attempt
from what i read i think i want a nforce4 chipset for my AMD 64 CPU?

the cards i am thinking about so far are ($100 to $150 would be nice)

MSI K8N neo4...but I don't think it has firewire (i think userfriendly) $117
Abit AN8 nforce4 $128

Question #2 Ram

What is the best ram for AMD 64 3700+? I want 1GB dual channel

So far I found OCZ EL DDR PC3200 Dual Channel Platinum for $168 (2x512MB sticks)...seems like good stuff to me and from the posts i read.

Is it worth going to PC4000?

Question #3 graphic cards

These are still really confusing to me. I want to spend less than $300 here.

what's better?
Sapphire x800 GTO2 for $287 or
Gforce 6800 GS

I figure as long as my CPU, motherboard, ram, and graphics card work well together i can figure out the rest.

Any help with these components would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say definitely go for an MSI if you want a simple BIOS but a great board...

I like G.SKILL and Geil RAM, but OCZ is great too.

And I'd say the 6800gs can outdo the x800gto2.

Hope I helped =)

Looks like you have done your homework
If you can squeeze it consider 2x1g modules... great for gaming and the video stuff
The RAM you selected is a good choice.
To get a better idea of what you can budget...
Tell us exactically what you need for this build!

BTW, I moved it to this section for you

it's great to know that I'm on the right track. Thanks for the link to the cheap GTO2! This site is so informative.

I found this site by flipping through a PC mag at Chapters (wish I could remember which mag)...anyways this site was a list of the top five websites for custom builders and OCers! Way to go.

All I have left to order is a case, PSU, and a graphic card (currently leaning towards the sapphire GTO2)

Is it worth buying a PSU with that new rail technology? Is ultra ok for PSU?

thanks for moving my post

Are you joking? The GTO2 is moddable. The normal GTO? Meh, get the Powercolor 16 pipe GTO for $185, it will kill GS.
