Just enough, maybe more? pt.2

Thread Starter
So I've slept about four hours over the past two days or so looking at a million different set ups for my first build. So far I've solidified the fact that I'll be running an AMD II X4 955 and a MSI 790FX-GD70 for the mobo.

My dilemma now seems to be what PSU/GPU to run that wll allow me to continue to upgrade in the future. I'm definately going to skip the Dx 11 GPUs seeing as there aren't really any titles that appeal to me as of yet and the price/availability seems a little ridiculous.

The mobo I chose has quad Crossfire and runs x16/x16 in dual (x8/x8/x8/x8 in quad). My question is, if I plan on running quad CF in the near future will it slow the performance all that much if it's x8/x8/x8/x8 (and I understand that if I run this that I will definately need a solid/reliable PSU to power four cards)?

Or does anybody think that running 4 cards is a waste (non-significant performance increase/massive heat in my case)?

I'd look into getting a Radeon 5850. They scale well for Crossfire and are less than $300. For a PSU, the Corsair TX850W is on sale at Newegg for $99.99 after rebate. That will be plenty for Crossfire. If you really want to do 4 cards, you need to look at >1000w PSU.

Quad CF will be a waste. Even triple CF is not recommended. Just get a powerful single card or two powerful ones.

nice choice on board and chip, I went with same

Although I will probably only dual crossfire in the future, I just went with the board for the price and options (dual lan, AND the availability for 4 crossfire if I want)

I was gonna add also, if you DID wanna upgrade to 4 cards in the future, could get a extra psu just to supply the cards

something like this (was $60 the other day..)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-054-_-Product

that way you wouldn't have to dump the cash on a 1000w psu when you might not even pull over 700w ever
