189gb instead of 200gb. Is this common? - Page 2

it has nothing to do with losing space during format or windows not recognizing the full size

its all completely due to numbering/ marketing... the way the #s are converted is the exact reason... its already been said so read the previous posts and youll get it

Older versions of Windows had problems recognizing drives larger than 127GB. If you have XP SP2, you're fine. BTW, my 160GB shows as 149 and my 250GB shows as 233. Like Spooked said, it's just due to the fact that most people think its 1000 when it's actually more. I thought there was a hard drive company that used to make it's formatted capacity the advertised, but I can't remember which and if they still do it Oh, well.

Ive always hated how they do that

I bought a 1 gb memory stick for my psp and when i put it in it was only 940 mb

that was annnoying because when i bought it it was about $160 and for that price i could have got a 250 gb harddrive

I have heard about that theory before. However, i just bought a 200GB Cicero hard drive and it only detects it as 127GB. I have talked to some friends and they said to check the virtual memory cause it might take up some space. I did, only 748MB though. Where did the rest of the hard drive space go?
