another "Windows 7 using too much ram" thread

Thread Starter
Recently my RAM usage goes to about 80 percent even if I kill all my (program) processes.

Should I restart to disable superfetch? (If that's the problem).

I am running Windows 7 RTM, I'm not doing a fresh install to my retail copy until I have to.

Any idea? Should I disable superfetch and restart?

thanks

It's not using too much ram. It's using your ram effectivly. Unless you have performance issues, don't do anything.
Empty ram is wasted ram, you want your OS to use it in order to make your comp run faster.

well, that's the thing, I do have performance issues. It goes to 99 percent and sounds like I'm about to blue screen (repeating sounds, etc).

6GB. You're not really helping by saying that. Think about it, how does sharing your ram usage help solve my problem? My 860 sitting right beside me is using 12 percent right now, but that's not really solving my problem.

As a comparison? And how does responding like that help you?

Anyway, do you have anything running in the background which may require a lot of RAM?
Perhaps something (such as drivers) is malfunctioning and thus using up loads of RAM?

You don't have to get all pissy about it, I was hoping other people would chip in with their RAM usage, that way we could establish what is 'normal'. But I would say 80% of 6GB is way outside of normal.

Could you post a printscreen of your process list? Do the processes on that list add up to the amount of memory used, or is something else filling it up?

A comparison isn't going to solve my problem. That's the point.

And, nope, nothing I am running uses much RAM. I'm not sure if drivers are causing the problem, as I don't know how to check which is causing the problem.

edit: I don't think they add up, but I've killed most of them once, and it doesn't make much of a difference.

Did you look through task manager/processes to see what's eating it all?

OP

Have you run a spyware/virus scan lately? Something is going on and it's NOT superfetch

You've probably already looked here but just incase try this:
1. Hold Ctrl+Shift and press Escape.
2. Click the "Performance" tab.
3. Click the "Resource Monitor" button.
4. Click the "Memory" tab.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to get it to display the DLL libaries along with the processes, just can't think of how (I recall doing it - maybe I'm thinking of a third party app). Maybe someone else can explain that?
