Mobo/Proc/Mem/Vid build <$400

Thread Starter
Hello all and thanks for any help you can lend me. This is my first post on these forums but i've read through them on and off for the past several years... I have a question about a budget build. I have some parts from my current system I will be recycling into the new... but I'm looking at building a system that will be able to play current gen games and (hopefully) the near future games (even if not on the highest settings...) I have about $400 that I'd be willing to spend, but if I have to flow over a bit I would do that. I have a 500W power-supply to work with so I'll need to stay within that power range... or upgrade (assuming the power will be plenty). From what I've read I believe a Phenom II x3 would be good, and I'd like DDR3.... so which motherboard/CPU/memory/video card setup would anyone recommend?
unfortunately DDR3 would be out of your price range. You will have to stick to DDR3

If you go with the x3 720 and get the gigabyte UD3H bundle, its gonna cost you close to 200.

ATI is the best right now in terms of performance/value:

thats 150 dollars

I like kingston memory. Heres on DDR2 2GB 1066

65 dollars

Sapphire 5770:

4gb G.Skill 1600:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193

X3 720 / Gigabyte 790GPT AM3 mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.295032

$450 + free USB drive with the G.Skill RAM

Its a bit over, but I couldn't find a good combo deal with a Athlon II Regor chip, which would be my budget alternative. Plenty going on if you want to stay at DDR2 though. I'd cough up the extra $50 now.

You could also get a cheaper GFX card, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you want to play future games. You could shave that $50 on the GPU but you will need to upgrade sooner depending on what games you play and at what resolution

Edit - Why pay $156 for a 4870 when you can get a vapor-x cooled 4890 for $175.

Double edit - I see they aren't offering good specials on the 4890 now... They will pop back up.

your setup simply will not work as x3 is not a AM3 CPU and will not have the memory controller for DDR3. The DDR3 memory is a waste of money

I agree with the above build. I upgraded my stepsons rig over the summer from a 4600+ to the X3 720 BE and I am really imrpessed with it. Gigabyte boards are some of the best and the 5770 would be a great card for this budget. You can't go wrong here. Your existing power supply worries me a little, what brand and model is it? The psu is one of the most important parts of the system imho.

You got good mobo in there with some good ram and a decent future proof vid card that should run just about every game around max. The processor is single core but it can overclock very high and it is also comes with a very small price tag. If you ever want to upgrade your processor to a multi-core which would probably be a quad core it would hurt the pocket less with this cpu and you got all the great tools to plug in any new cpu.
