Whats a better way to go, Opteron 148 or AMD 64 3700+? Im not gonna overclock my rig at first, and if I do. It will be a light OverClock? Also I've heard a lot of stuff about the Opteron CPUs being a hit or miss OverClocking CPU, and that the 3700+ is more consitant? Is that true, please give me some more information about what CPU I should decide to buy.

This next rig im making for myself will be a complete gaming PC.

Thanks, Josh

They'll perform the same at stock and on average, will overclock pretty similarly as well. I'd take whichever was the cheapest. If you can find out the stepping of the Opteron I can give you an idea about how far it will go, but if it's only a moderate o/c you're looking for then it doesn't really matter

Why is that, I thought they were the same internal chip. Besides, aren't the 3700+s getting better STOCK benchmark scores than the opteron 148?
I'm pretty sure they both have San Diego cores. The only difference is that the voltage on the opteron 148 is 1.45. With that voltage you can overclock the cpu more than usual since it doesn't generate as much heat as a normal 1.75v ( i think) cpu. I heard the latest batches didn't overclock as much.

Given the fact that the opterons are going away, and most if not all the good steppings are gone, I'd stick with the 3700.

(then again, if you can get a good price and decent stepping, there's no real good reason to NOT go with the opteron)

Are opterons supported on all 939 socket AMD compatiable motherboards?

That's not a true statement and the Opterons have slightly relaxed memory controller settings which causes them to be slightly slower at equal speeds.
