Did you already buy the graphics card or is that what you plan to buy?

Also are you going to game on the 'puter or word process?

we cant tell you that lol...its up to you, xp home is 80 at newegg so it wont break ur budget to get a LEGAL copy, god forbid

are you saying that all you need is the mobo, or do you need ev erything but the hd and case, because if those are all you have , you will probably need more cash cuz i dont think 400 will cover it

i don't think your gonna have money for cooling left. Get the 20 buck OS from your friend if it is LEGAL, cuz you can always call Microsoft and they activate it for you (if it is legal). btw do you wanna go amd or intel? (intel im guesing?

EDIT: If you go AMD i can help you out. if you go INTEL i can't hehe) (amd are better for gaming)

Well, for AGP cards, there's not a whole lot you can do as you used to be able to. Everyone's going PCIe now (which is a bit of a ***** to me), so there's the following options:

1.Go the good old AMD socket A route (get a sempron chip)
2.Go the socket 754 (Athlon 64, Sempron(64)) or lower-end 939 (athlon 64)
3.Go the LGA 775 route, but good luck finding a decent AGP mobo there. (Intel)

When you do settle on what you want, shop around for things like hard drives and memory, as they are often on sale, same with monitors and optical drives. For power supplies, motherboards, cpu's, and software, go to the Egg.

PSU reccomendation:
-FSP group(Fortron Source) at least 400w
-BEWARE some "deals", as you may lose some hardware. I personally built my system with a $16 cheifmax 450w (****) and it blew back in early october, so just after a year of use.
-I never use included power supplies from some of these sub-$20 case manufacturers, not good enough quality

Memory:
-I personally like Kingston, but there are many good brands
-you'll want at least 512MB

OS:
-windows XP(duh...), either Home or Pro is your decision. Stay away from MCE if you game. XP-64 is probably too expensive
-I actually scored an OEM copy of xp home for just $76 at viosoftware.com

any processor can word process and surf the 'net, you just need software and an internet connection

get openoffice for word processing, as it kicks microsoft's ass
