SO frustrated with my machine!

Thread Starter
It's been nothing but problem after problem after problem and my patience is growing thiin... Finally got my machine built up several days ago and have been messing with the overclocking ability of the board and chip. All of a sudden this morning, the machine wouldn't startup. When I hit the power button, fans spin and the HD and power light comes on, but no display, no beeps, nothing... This is just after last night when everything worked and I clocked it back down to 2.2. So I reset the CMOS jumper and nothing happens. I pull the battery put it back and it finally restarts agagin. So, I figured I'd put everything back to stock settings.

Get home after work today and turn on the comp - nothing. Same thing where the fan spins, HD spins, but no beeps, no display, goes nowhere. Tried reseting the CMOS jumper and battery and now still nothing. What's going on here??? Everything worked last night...

Figured something must not be installed correctly so I check all of the connections and everything is fine. My next thought is the PSU, but it's a fairly new 450 Watt PSU. I unplugged everything but just the motherboard, HSF, vid card, and one stick of ram (not even HD) and the thing still won't startup.

What's the deal here? Sorry about the long rant and thanks for any help!

Do you overclock in bios or in windows.
What type of PSU is it? A link would be nice.

I overclock in BIOS. The PSU is made by Hercules (OEM with case). It was one of those "upgraded" PSUs bought when the case was bought. Guess it wasn't worth the extra $ for it. It has 14A for the 12V rail. Is that not enough? Even so, shouldn't it power up just a motherboard, HSF, vid card, and one stick of ram??

sounds like the mobo to me... no post beeps would prompt me to remove all hardware from the mobo and rebuild with just ram and cpu and video card... see if you get a post error beep then...

I had these SAME symptoms when my RAM went bad, but mine was a slow progression, it took a week to get to the point yours is, where it won't do anything no matter what. During that week, sometimes if I reset the CMOS it would boot the next time fine, but after that, it would be back to doing nothing. If your fans and HD's spin up, I would say you're PSU is probably functioning properly, especially if it worked fine and would even allow overclock without shutting down on you since you got it, and nothing else has changed. You have any other RAM you can try it with? I'd be willing to bet that's where your problem lies.

I agree, sounds like a bad motherboard. Try running only with the essentials (CPU, RAM, video card). That PSU is rather weak, may want to get something more powerful (at least 20A in the 12V rail).

try reseatting vga and ram in board, and then try to rule out bad parts such vga, ram, cpu by testing with known working parts... like the ones you have in the closet (or your friend's closet )

So..... odd turn of events. I tried replacing the ram and vid card and still nothing. Then I grabbed my XP3200 from my other computer and put it in the machine and the thing suddenly booted up fine. I put the XP-M 2600 in the comp where the XP3200 came from and that booted up fine as well. I swapped the chips back and everything is working again. I'm very happy that everything is starting up but the thing that I do understand is what could have possibly be the culprit??? I'm worried that a couple of days later, this same thing might happen again.

Also, I posted a couple of days ago about how I coulding get the fsb above 205mhz (link here). A reply said that because the chip was designed to run at 133 that I shouldn't expect to get the fsb too high but when the chips were swapped, I was able to go 232 (highest the other mb could support) and it booted up fine. What does this mean?

Oh, and the weirdest thing happened. When I threw the XP3200 on the NF7, I was able to access the full multiplier range and the thing booted and was actually running that that speed. I tried 150 x 14 and 200 x 8 and everything worked fine and even CPUZ showed the speeds. Even Crystal CPUID wouldn't allow me access to the multiplier management. Does that mb unlock multis or is this some kind of anomaly?

Again, thank you so much for all of your help!!!
