Kill a cop and then steal the cops hat and then steal the cop car and load it with explosives and ram into wallmart, taking out everysingle brick of that building.
If he did that he'd get a lesser fine...
Oh wait, was it just the murder and burning down two houses that was less?

Here is the really important part of the article:

Quote:
Judge Gertner said that, although Tenenbaum's case did not constitute fair use, she could envision a fair-use defence for someone who shared files only during a period before the law concerning file-sharing was clear and before legitimate download services were widely available.

She urged Congress to consider changing copyright law. The judge wrote that "there is a deep potential for injustice in the Copyright Act as it is currently written".

"There is something wrong with a law that routinely threatens teenagers and students with astronomical penalties for an activity whose implications they may not have fully understood," she added.

I look at it this way: If I pay for a movie ticket, buy a copy of a book or game, or have the CD on hand, it's just as much mine online if I can find it, as it is the actual physical copy in my hand. However, there are people who make a daily living off of the revenue they get from pirating movies, games, music, and anything else they can get their grubby paws on. This doesn't deter me from wanting to get content online. As a matter of fact, I rarely torrent or file share anymore, as there's redundancy to it, if you're not on a VPN or private network altogether. So, you guys can sit here and bicker over user rights and what is and isn't fair, but, remember this.... you can't negotiate the facts once you've been caught.

Well purchasing a movie ticket, or a event ticket, doesn't give you the right to find that material online and use/distribute it. If I get a early screening ticket for, say, Kick Ass and then I go home and download and distribute the shared file I could see where I could hurt box office receipts. That said, I don't give a s*** and pirate certain files all the time.

For instance, when was the last time anyone paid for p**n? I personally have never felt guilty that those hard working actresses never got their cut.

I'm a huge opponent of Game piracy, and movie piracy to some degree, but as far as I'm concerned, the record companies can get screwed. I was in a signed band (to subsidiary of Atlantic records), and it was hellish to say the least. It disgusted me so badly that I stopped playing the instrument that I had played for 10 years at that point, and no longer listen to music, except the occasional independent artist.

I mean, you know it had to be bad if it can kill a musicians love for music.

Record companies and all those involved with them can burn in hell IMO. Some of the most parasitic, disgusting, vile, loathsome worthless human beings I've ever encountered.
i agree. this is completely ridiculous. just because they don't want to adapt to a changing market.

with all the nonsense that comes out and is considered music, and they still want to be paid millions for rehashing the same nonsense over and over.

i mean, remember when there was that issue of them wanting Apple to charge for the 30 second previews?

a lot of the time people can't afford to countersue and just settle for the 14k or so fine.

Exactly, now if only someone could get the Supreme Court to hear a case on this then they actually COULD change the law.
