For those of you who are pilots, or know anything about planes....

Pilots hate carb ice...

Could overclockers harness its power for cooling.

Just build a venturi with a fan on top of it. It drops the temp inside of a carborator on a plane over 70 degrees F.

ineristing idea, but i'd recemend running some experements.
does it actually improve air flow?
more signifacantly so compaired to a regular set up?

A good idea, but there are some flaws. First, the restriction of airflow means less air to the proc/hs. Secondly, unless the venturi comes all of the way to the hs, the air will slow down proportionally due to the added air flow area. Third, lets suppose that somehow the airflow rate stayed the same after the venturi or even if it didn't, the turbulent airflow would not hit the hs evenly on all areas. This would result in higher temps as well. Need a lot of air, get a tornado.

The reason why planes get carb ice is not from the venturi effect but from the evaporation of the fuel that enters at the venturi. All the venturi does is create a partial vacuum that draws fuel into the carburator.

the venturi effect will give you a temp decrease, i forgot the formula for proving it but it does work as and it happens at the pressure drop so if you mounted a rad at the right point in the air flow it would see lower temps but the amount of air flow you would need would be rediculouse for any type of computer setup

basically nothing you would want in your house

We could still use a Venturi to help us cool our CPU. What we do is mount the Venturi so that a fan pushes air down the throat. The narrowed bit is where we locate the fins for the heatsink.


Let's step back and review Carbs 101:

The Venturi increases airflow speeds tremendously, providing enough vacuum to pull fuel through the jets into the stream and, hopefully, instantly whip it into a fine vapor.

Tremendously increased airspeeds? This means the fins will be able to transfer more heat for the same volume of air than if there were no venturi at all and the air were moving over a normal HS. This means if we run heatpipes to the actual Venturi inside the cooler, then run our network of fins there, then vent the air out a larger outlet port, we can possibly get more efficient cooling for the same volume of air moving through!

Anyone with a machine shop available to them willing to build one and give it a try?

call me a noob but if you flip this and that wouldn't that be a bong cooler? if so then your absolutely right! one made for a plane might work well too
