i was following this earlier, i can see why it wouldnt transfer heat as well. would it be possible to make some sort of evaporative cooling for it? like spraying alcohol onto a radiator at the same rate as it evaporates, thus pulling the heat out of the water? just wondering if its possible. must note, that a small spark near the rear of the computer while trying to do this would create a massive fireball similar to those in anime coming from your radiator

I don't think that would work very well. Blowing air over it is faster, cheaper, and probably better. I don't think evaporating alcohol would really do much, and you might as well use water then.

It's been awhile since I took material science, but I'm thinking that the alcohol would weaken your tubing over time.

Yeah I would guess that the alcohol would eat your tubing. I've heard people say watter wetter will eat through it, so using basic logic.....

Like Transonic said it won't catch fire. You can hold a lighter in 80 proof and it won't do anything.

Alcohol's ONLY cooling properties come from it evaporating. And there is no way to apply this to a cooler setup.

Is that the stuff you see at partys when guy spits out liquor and makes it cath on fire? Also what is that schohol that some race cars use ans it burns clear so if a driver or pit crew member is on fire you can't see the flame but can see the guy stop, drop, and roll I have seen that on tv.

Um, what do you mean? We were talking about using it inside of a wc setup like water. It would act about the same but give you higher temps.

Anyways, If you were doing this you'd prolly be using pure ethanol or isopropyll alcohol. Last time I checked, methanol was used in indycar fuel and maaaaaybe F1 too. It contitutes a large part of the fuel, and has pretty much replaced gasoline for races. I think it has to do with safety too, since it has a higher combustion point or something. Anyways, before you get any ideas, methanol will make you go blind.

Ethanol is what you drink, and methanol is made from wood grain. Moonshiners used to use corn in their products, so occasionally an entire corn cob got dropped in. That made some methanol, and sometimes moonshiners and their customers would go blind and or die.

alcohol has less of a specific heat capacity than water, so i would personally not recommend it for use in a water cooling system unless you're going to be running it with a chiller of sorts - even then running a 50/50 antifreeze/water mixture would be better than alcohol, and even if you did use alcohol, high-purity isopropyl alcohol would be the only thing you really should use

Alcohols general properties ie; it's cooling properties come from evaporation, not it's specific gravity,or flash point, no matter the "Type of Alcohol". The general makeup of Alcohol is the same except for some changes on the Benzene ring of it's molecular structure.

I think alcohol is worthelss in a normal setup.. MAybe if you used 10% alcohol with 90% distilled water, it would work as a good anti algae..

Now if your building a chiller, alcohol is one of hte best and cheapest sources of 'anti-freeze'

I use windshield washer fluid with my chiller, $2 a gallon for -30f stuff, and it has alcohol+methanol in it..

But like I said I doubt theres any difference without runnig a chiller..
