DX11. Why does everyone recommend it now?

Thread Starter
OK, I have been noticing that everyone has been recommending 5 series cards for DX11. Why? Wouldn't it be smarter to wait a few months until more games support it and the prices go down a bit? IMO, it is silly to buy any hardware at release, but to each their own.

I just feel like I am missing something. i know that it is the future, but is it really worth the investment right now? (for that reason. Barring it being a more powerful card, I am talking about switching just for DX11)

How many games out right now or are to be release before the end of the year that will support DX11?

We should see games coming out in about 3 months that natively support DX11, if you want to upgrade your GPU now, definitely get a DX11 GPU for future proofing; if you can hold off and wait a bit until actual DX11 games are out and newer DX11 GPUs come out (Fermi probably) and prices drop for current DX11 GPUs, then definitely wait.

You are absolutely right. DX11 will be supported by more games in the future but buying DX11 cards right now, for that sole reason, when the prices are pretty much maxed out, is not the smartest thing to do moneywise. Then we have hardware addiction.....

There are 3 games out supporting DX11 I believe. Dirt2, BattleForge and one other MMO I can't seem to remember.

Well to those who are going to purchase a new video card now (which would include new builds), then IMO it would be best to recommend them a DX11 card.

Not everyone will have the cash to buy another card three months from now.

But to those who just want a quick upgrade then I would just hold on to that cash and wait.

Being a self-titled cheap son-of-a-blank, I understand you fully. (I'm cheap, not stingy!)

Same thing goes for vehicles. Why in the hell would anyone buy a brand new model car/truck for $25k+/-, when you can buy 1 or 2 year used at about 40% less for $15k with only 20k miles on it?! The car will still last well beyond 100k miles before any major repairs are needed.

Unless you plan to get a 5850, or dual 5770's, it would be a bad route.

They recommend it for the same reason they tell people to build an i7 for a basic use computer.

People are under the assumption that more and bigger is better.

It is retarded. You don't need a DX11 GPU unless you are forced to upgrade right now and want to keep your card for a long while. Or if you have cash to burn and want the new top end GPUs.

I have no intention of upgrading my 8800gt, and if I did it NOW I would probably end up getting a 4890 and then getting a 58xx series card later on when there were more DX11 titles to play and they weren't jacked up in price.

Its not like the games are going to dissapear after they are released.
