Alot of praise indeed. It's basically just a "normal" custom soundcard built around the X-Fi chip. No Creative drivers, just the chip. Which is a good thing iirc. I'm very happy with mine.

So are there any advantages over the Xonar DX with the D1? or is it purely the power cable? And it seems that no one has answered if I will really get much out of these cards with my headset.

DX - PCIe
D1- PCI

The DX needs a FLOPPY power connector, not sure about the D1.

You will be blown away from going from onboard to a Xonar card. When i upgraded my motherboard there was only a negligible difference between the onboard audio and my Audigy 2ZS so i just lived with the onboard for a while. After hooking up my new X-Fi Platinum i cannot believe i let myself use that crap onboard audio chip for so long.

The power cable is required for it because it's a PCI-E device.

Unfortunately, I don't know how good or bad this card is with headphones. But I haven't seen any complaints yet.

It is great when paired with a decent set of headphones but like you said, the only very minor problem is the floppy connector requirement that is not really a problem at all...

Oh, I wasn't saying it was a problem. I was just explaining why it needs a power cable.

But now that I gave it some thought, it would be a minor problem for me because I like the inside of my rig to be neat and clean and with as few cables as possible.
