CPU / Heatsink Cleaning

Thread Starter
While my video card is off being replaced by MSI, I decided to remove my heatsink and processor to clean them and re-apply the heat transfer gue.

I have heard that using a cotton swab and some rubbing achohol on the heatsink and processor where they make contact is good. Any suggestions?

yea it works well... them more the % of alcohol the better. it dries quick too. i used 70% and it worked well. i also used Q-tips because it's easier to for me to just get one wet with the alcohol, rub the paste off, and throw it away. a cotton ball is a little bulky

Thanks. I always want reassurance when I am playing with a 200 dollar processor...

I like to use cotton balls/swabs, some people will reccomend that you use coffee filters, but those can damage the CPU die if your processor dosnt have an IHS, or it will scratch your CPU heatsink finish, or CPU IHS finish, if your IHS is lapped.

if you want to spend a few bucks for a possible 1-5C temp drop. try this:

Artic Clean 2pc kit

It gave me about a 3C drop in temps, but I've heard it to drop even lower. and it works MUCH better than alcohol, I used it and my processor was 2x shinier than with just regular alcohol.
