5870 X3 VS 2 5970s witch well win - Page 3

first off, as many have said one 5970 is more than enough. trust me, this thing absolutely destroys EV-ER-Y-THING I throw at it.

but that said, to answer your question, 3 5870's should almost certainly beat 2 5970's for two main reasons

1. Quad-fire almost always scales minimally better and sometimes even worse than tri-fire in many real world scenarios

2. the gpu's that are on the 5970's pcb are effectively downclocked 5870's that put them (individually) somewhere right in between a 5850 and a 5870 with respect to speed. so, factor that in, and three 5870's should be faster in terms of raw performance than 2 5970's

but that explanation was solely to answer your initial question--if i were to give my suggestion, i would repeat over and over again what i said before and what chickeninferno put very well-- ONE 5970 is more than you will ever need. keep it, it is FAF (that is--fast as ****)

2 5970's beat out 3 5870's, but when u oc all 3 5870's it gets pretty close.

u wont need more then one 5970 unless your going for eyefinity

I'm really curious as to the source that specified that. Considering that the scaling on video cards decrease as you increase GPU's the Tri-Fire solution would match if not exceed a Quad-Fire 5970 solution. The 5970 is a down clocked 5870 Crossfire and the same applies when it is in Quad-Fire. The scaling on a Tri-Fire 5870 @ 2560x1600 would be at least 25% higher than that of a 5970 Quad-Fire setup. You can argue that a 5970 Quad-Fire system is slightly cheaper but a TriFire setup has superior scaling with alot less micro stuttering.

Thats when ATI finally gets arround to enabling EyeFinity WITH Crossfire on the 58xxx series let alone with more then one 5970
