Asus vs. Gateway - Page 2

ASUS.

Higher res, more HDD space, and overall better quality (Gateway is Acer, which is not known for quality products).

Now I'm also considering the Asus G72 on Best Buys website as it has a core 2 quad or the ASUS G51J-A1.

The former is $1299 and the latter (with i7 tech) can be found for $1400. Do you think that the increased resolution/HDD (Both in terms of space and rpm)/DDR3 and extra cores is worth the $200 odd dollar increase? I could stretch to that price if needs be...
Yes, the G51J-A1 will be a kickbutt laptop. For $1400 you won't find any better. The i7 will be faster and better on battery, and clocks to 2.6 Ghz when plugged in iirc. And you can RAID0 those hard drives.

Have to agree with UndertheGun. I have the older Fx-7811 since Aug 2008 and love it the only thing im suprise about this new model that its similar but a little downgraded in the display area and hard drive. When i bought mine it has the WUXGA at 1900x1200 and a 7200 HDD. The FX is upgradeable, you can add another HDD for raid and with a bios update you can upgrade the CPU. I have already put a SSD and been looking to upgrade my cpu to a quad mobile. For $200-300 less its a good deal.

So I think I've finally decided and will be getting the G51J-A1 - mainly due to a lower weight and the fact that, as it's not from bestbuy, it comes with a 2 year international warranty and 1 year accidental damage - I'll be studying in Japan for all of next year so probably need this more than anything. Plus it's only $250 more than I was originally going to spend anyway so might be well worth it in the end

Good choice on Asus. Why are you studying in Japan then? One of my brother's friends lived in Japan for two years as a missionary.

Unfortunately that model is backordered at the moment so will have to wait another 3-4 weeks but am not too fussed - it'll hopefully coincide with some nice new years sales/falling prices due to the introduction of the 300m range.

I'm currently studying for a BA in Japanese at university in England - 4th year out is obligatory so will be there (and in Korea as that's my subsidiary language) from August onwards

Here's my review of the G72GX. I love it. In short, I upgraded from a P-7805u and I think that the Asus' build quality is far above that of Gateway. Performance wise, they will be similar, but you can overclock the ASUS so it can have a slight edge.

I have a Gateway FX, one of the older models, and I have had problems with it since I had it. It's been in the shop more then I've had it. I'm getting a new laptop through the no-lemon policy at best buy, and i'm going to get an asus.
