Question about displaying 720p and 1080i on HDTV

Thread Starter
Have a 4870.

Question my friend said 720p is better than 1080i and it should look nicer. But I notice that when I game on my HDTV it looks a lot better in 1920 x 1080 opposed to 1280 x 720?

Does "i" or "p" make a difference when it comes to gaming?

Is it better to play at 720p or 1080i?

Thanks.

1080i is pretty much 720p, the i stands for interlaced.

IMO, 720p > 1080i, and of course 1080P > 720p/1080i.

"i" stands for "interlaced" and "P" stands for "Progressive."

Progressive means that the screen will render every pixel at the same time, so 720 vertical pixels at once. Interlaced means that they will only render every 2nd pixel at once, leaving some people dissatisfied by the image quality.

If you think 1080i looks better, than use that.

So 1080i also applies to pc gaming?

I am a tad confused because when I bump the resolution in games to 1920 x 1080. does that mean its really at 1280 x 720???

example crysis at 1080i looks a lot better than in 720p when i play it.

That should help clarify things a lot more.

The answer is: No, you're still using 1920 x 1080 pixels, but you're not rendering every pixel at the same time.

1080i is actually 720p upscaled, with half the frame rate.

Shouldn't matter much if you're watching films, but it will affect your gaming performance, especially on a PC.

The way the picture works is fairly simple. Interlaced pictures work in "lines" we'll say. Lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 etc refresh in one second (for exmaple, it's much quicker than that) and lines 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 refresh in the second , er, second.

So in 10 seconds there have been 5 refreshes of the screen. Abrilliant way to view this is to whip your digital camera out and point it at the screen. You can literally see the scan lines.

Progressive pictures refresh independantly of each other. So lines 1, 2, 6, 9 and can all refresh at the same time. This is a why it is a desired feature.

In 10 seconds, there could have been 10 refreshes of the screen.

If you're playing a signal at 720p at 60FPS, then to upscale to 1080i would reduce the frame rate by half, because each pixel cannot refresh independantly of one and other and must interlace with.

Sorry for my vague explanation. But the long and short of it is that 1080i will be fine for watching films, but you're better off gaming at 720p if your TV doesn't natively support 1080p.

^Youtube is being weird on me right now wont let me load that video.

Okay so 720p is better than 1080i it seems.

It makes a bit more sense now still confused at this: My tv says 1080i at 30hz wont let me go to 60hz (ATI CCC Says).
However in games with vsync it syncs to 60 even though i am at 1920 x 1080???

Also what happens if im not at 1280 x 720 but am like at 1440 or 1600 opposed to 1080i.

Will I still get "p" if I am a notch lower than 1920 x 1080?
