The 170 will perform slightly slower than the X2 at identical speeds. As far as the Opterons having a better memory controller, I'd have to disagree. If they perfrom slower at identical speeds, that pretty much assures you that they simply have their timings relaxed a tad. It's the only other possibility other than the cache timings being lowered, but I don't think that's the case.

So, IYO, which would be better: and Opty 165 or a X2 3800+?

Why is intel in the vote when you're posting this in AMD section?

If I was buying it blind, meaning that I couldn't see the steppings on either, I would select the cheapest price I could find between the 2. If I could see the steppings, I would go with the better stepping, whichever model it turned out to be.

I would go with the 165. I have not heard of a 165 that was an extremely poor overclocker AND you get 1MBx2 AND it's usually cheaper than the x2 (oem version that is)

Because I think Intel chips are very good as well, but there is no "CPU Gerneral" section. I posted it in here since there are more AMD CPUs in the running then there are Intels.

well you get 2x1mb with the 165 and 2x512mb with the 3800

right now at newegg retail version 3800= $322
165= $330
and im pretty sure that your gaurunteed to oc the 165 to 2.0 ghz no problem so it seems like your paying $8 for an extra 512 mb of cache (which aint to bad)

i dont really care either way but as far as a deal i would go with the 165 and even if you only get it to 2.5 or 2.6 it will still perform onpar with a stock $700 cpu

I heard more people saying opteron is better overclocker. Why there is no opteron 144/146 and AMD64 3000/3200/3500? Is there a rule in this poll to only pick those >$200?
