Your right, all too often people get stuck on benchmarks...u have to be careful and not fall victim, benchmarks are good to look at but when your loading a game, transfering files and such its not as dramatic...just saying...

Nice results!

Kramy...You are right, but!

When are you going to give the "real" advice about short stroking???

Judging by your posts I think you already know that, short stroking doesn't increase performance. It only allows the benchmark program to only test the clusters available on the short stroked portion of the drive. If I have data that lives on the first 10,000 clusters... it doesn't matter if I have 1 million or 10 billion clusters available in that partition... The data is located in the same location (first 10,000) on the drive, regardless of the partition size.

You are only fooling the benchmarks programs... not the real world. Google Short stroked... read the FACTS.

If you want fast storage, want to spend tons of money, and don't care about space, why not just get an SSD? They are expensive, fast, and low capacity. It's completely retarded to purposely not use most of a hard drive just to keep data on the outer portion. Or better yet, why not just buy some 15k hard drives? They are also expensive, fast, and low capacity.

I dont have tons of money, im trying to make do with whats available to me wich is 2x WD caviar Blue 500gigs Sata III 6gbs/, so I decided to try out the short stroke technique, I must say Im a believer now. I shouldnt judge till iv tried something...heres my results. Achilles was right, even more right if you partition your disk properly if you want room to grow but im taking baby steps. I short stroked my 2 500 gig drives to 150gigs a piece, 300gigs striped in raid ), I reduced my accese time from 16.1 using full platter space to 11.1 short stroking the disks to 300 total. also my read speeds are a little higher and stable, not the best speeds but for 2 caviar Blues not bad at all...

After Short Stroking

Yeah, messing around with the drives can make quite a bit of difference in performance thumb.gif

Me, I like dedicated drives for things!
OS drive, games drive, fraps drive, encoding from drive, encoding too drive, yada yada yada biggrin.gif
Because IMO you can't beat a drive that is just doing one job!
And yeah, partitioning/shots stroking does make HDDs a lot sappier smile.gif

So you're claiming that if you have a 1 TB drive and make a 300 GB partition, that data is going to be read faster than if you read the identical data off an identical drive that's in the same position on the platter on a partition that's the full 1 TB? Doing this makes nothing faster, it just disables any data from ever being put towards the inner portions of the platters.

HUH, you made no sense, all data is written towards the inner part of the disk because it spins faster, its simple physics, where did you get your degree, University of kellogs corn flakes? lol
