Software volt mod vs pencil

Just came across mention in that guide of certain software that exists allowing voltage mods.

What's the deal, is one generally recognised as being the better option?

I have my 8B pencil ready, I would like to find this out before I get stuck in drawing pretty pictures on my graphics card, because I think a volt mod is my next step: http://www.overclock.net/nvidia-driv...ed-7600gt.html

Softmods are your easiest mods to do but they dont always work. You need to measure the voltage before and after the flash. If the flash does work then you have successfully raised your OCP for a hardmod. But if you are going to do a hardmod then I would suggest to put the pencil back in your bookbag and solder on a VR for precise voltage regulation. It is so hard getting the right amount of resistance penciling.

Well considering I do not own a multimeter, or posess soldering skills that accurate, it might be safe to say I have hit the limits of my card and my capabilities.

HOWEVER!

It is an old card anyway, I really don't mind risking it as a newer one is on the to-do list anyway. I am already harbouring suspicions on the integrity of my graphics memory due to some testing earlier today.. I'd like to pull as much as I can out of the 7600GT before upgrading, and at a stable 609/700 (up from 560/700) I don't feel like I've pushed hard enough yet! I keep getting these annoying faults from 3DMark if I go any higher though.. "IDirect3DDevice9:resent failed: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)"

Hey we've all got to start somewhere, investing in a multimeter would be a wise investment if you are doing any type of mods to your PC.

As for the error, i tried to research it but came up with nothing definitive on the cause but found a few suggestions. First it could be caused from an unstable OC, download and run ATITool and scan for artifacts, if that passes then you can eliminate instability. Second, keep the default resolution for 3DMark as it apparently causes that issue. And third, check your temps to make sure your card isnt overheating. you must always keep an eye on your temps when OC'ing. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info!

I can't run ATITool's artifact scanner for some reason, see point number 1 in bold here: http://www.overclock.net/nvidia-driv...ml#post7909318

I have kept the default resolution for 3DMark, I have never changed anything except which tests to run.

Temps sit at a nice steady 80degrees exactly under load (Furmark, 10minutes). I will update my temperature and results chart that I've been keeping and upload it later on today.

Pencil mod will be your best bet but i would highly suggest a DMM before continuing any voltage increasing methods. Also have you checked out the tutorials for bios flashing, you could possibly increase voltage that way although you may want to reapply a better thermal paste to your card to get more favorable temps

Somebody in the other thread suggested I try 0.27 beta. It works, but I'm not sure it works as it should.. when I run the artifact scan, the cube stops revolving. Is that normal??? My GPU still smashes along to the tune of 96% or so, the doozy just doesn't rotate.


Current clocks are at 602/746 on stock volts (up from 560/700 standard), stable in 3DMark testing etc, max temp 82degrees.

What does DMM stand for, sorry I'm very new at this
