Building a $3000+ rig. Which processor?

Yes you read correctly. A $3000+ rig. In Pennsylvania, high school students are required to do a culminating project (basically you learn to do something yourself), and I decided to (since I want to get into MIT), build a computer (I already know how to do this! Can't think of anything else to do relating with computer hardware!). I currently have $6000, my parents say they will pay for $2000 of it (lol since its for school), so I plan on building an AMAZING gaming rig. But I'm torn between Intel and AMD. Some of you may think I'm crazy to consider AMD when I can spend $1000 on an i7 975 , but I have my reasons (only using computer for gaming):

1. Processor does not contribute much in gaming

2. Don't need so much speed, Games are never gonna use all 3.4 ghz of an AMD Phenom II x4 965. With turbo-boost the i7 975 will reach speeds WELL over 4 Ghz.

3. Want to get ATi (hate Nvidia (me sniping Nvidia), but I heard that ATi cards do NOT run well on Intel platforms. I'm concerned about this because I want to get really good graphics cards.

So should I go with Intel or AMD, againg I'M ONLY USING THE COMPUTER FOR GAMING!

***If you guys would like a list of the components I'm planning to get for EITHER platform just ask!***

Cheers

For you guys you didn't feel like reading my entire paragraph, PRICE CAN BE ANY AMOUNT!!!

With that budget you have to go i7 975 and some intel g2 SSD's with 2x 5970s

Intel is the obvious choice. The i7 just destroys the Phenom II, and once overclocked, it''ll fly. No point in getting an AMD set up with the i7 in reach.

go with i7 920 or even i5 750 if your only going to game, but remember X58 supports dual X16, while P55 single X16, X8. So if you play on CFX or SLi then go X58

Intel has better high end motherboards for sure, triple channel, etc.
You might as well go Intel you have the budget...

that's a good point, but will the card run good on the intel motherboard?

wait for gulftown, also, you are wrong about the cpu not effecting gaming. the cpu needs to stream data to the gpu. without a fast cpu, fi you have good graphics, you will have a bottleneck. also for your case, go for the coolit boreas.
