Help deciding on a new mobo/processor.

Thread Starter
Its time for myself to build a new computer. The one that I am on now is quite old, but I would like to take some things from it and bring it to my brainchild of a computer that I want to build. What I know I am going to need for sure is a new motherboard, processor, ram, and probably a tower. I plan on using my current video card(GeForce4ti 4600), sound card (SB Audigy 2), ethernet card, hard drive, and my power supply unless it isnt necessary (400 watt I believe). Basically I want this same exact computer that I am on now but with a new motherboard and processor. Each piece of hardware will be replaced with time. Problem is I have never built my own computer, but I have always wanted to. I know that I want AMD for sure because of good price/performance value. I'm current on an Athlon 1.4 Ghz, and it has treated me very well. As far as choosing my new mobo and proc, I would like to leave that up to you guys because I don't know a whole lot about them. What I can tell you is that I am a pc gamer, but I dont need the most powerful machine in the world. Again, great value for price and performance. I would also need to know everything that I will need, and maybe some tips and pointers. I will gladly post any additional information that you may need. Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate it!

(get two sticks of this ram)

CPU, mother board, and ram for about $220 after shipping I built the same set up for my mother. Very stable, and has more than enough power to burn DVD's, run her scanner...ect. Well actually has alot of room for her to grow as well. I threw a radeon 9600 in there for another $80 and the hard drive was $40. I used an old case and 250w power supply I had laying arround and she got a decent computer for $350

Actually...here is the vid card i got her as well

Good luck on your first build, if you have enough smarts to come to this site I am sure it will be a breeze for ya!

just another idea of a group of stuff socket 939, with shipping itll prob be right at 300 bones

edit= the reason for my choices i forgot to add so here it is
the mobo is asus and as far as stability goes they are one of the best, they last forever and allways perform well- mine have allways lasted atleast a couple of years and werent replaced because they broke

the cpu is 939 and has 1mb l2 cahce which aint bad for the price and the ht runs at 1000mhz

the ram gskill is pretty good and 1 512 will be fine and if you really want to boost performance down the road throw in another stick of the same type and youll be good to go

Thanks for all of the input guys. I'm a little concerned that the processor speeds on the links you sent are a little slow considering im on a 1.4 ghz now? Or is it just that I dont know any better? Are those boards able to handle better processors if I wish to upgrade down the road? I'm also concerned with this because like I said im a gamer, and we all know how the minimum specs for games keep increasing. Thanks again!

The idea is to OC that CPU
It like any 939 should hit 2.6 or more. On the MB, it's best to get a NF series board vs a VIA. The NF (NForce) are good ocers... the 800 series VIA can be a pain to OC since it does not have a PCI/AGP lock.. I beleive the 880 do though.

I've come across another concern. Is the fact that I need a mobo with an AGP slot a problem? I'm only worried for upgrading purposes, and as far as I know PCI Express is the future of graphics cards. So far I've learned I want a socket 939 board with NForce. Still very much undecided. Thanks!

Right but if I decide to replace my Geforce 4 ti4600 (agp) say a year down the road from now, will agp be obsolete and PCI express rule the world?
