i7 920 D0 on P6X58D Premium

Thread Starter
Hi everybody,

I just got the i7 920 D0 and P6X58D Premium with G.skill Trident 16000 DDR3 6GB 2000GHz 9-9-9-24

for i7 overclocking , i 've read so many article, but i am still a bit confused.
can you guys give me some suggestion on how i start ?

I plan to reach 4GHz and 2000MHz for RAM but i dont think it's possible to have that high clock for RAM when CPU has 4GHz? would you guys care about Clock speed for RAM or the latency more? i saw some people they only use 1200MHZ and 6-7-6-XX, but they have 4.X GHz CPU clock.

And I dont understand the UnCore (in asus bios it shows UCLK)... it's weird

I hope you guys can help me start.

There is really no point of running more than 1600mhz if you are not benching all the time. There will be no real world difference between 1600mhz 6-7-6 and 2000mhz 9-9-9.

I would recommend you run the sticks at 1600mhz with the lowest timings you can get (probably 6-7-6ish). The problem with running 2000mhz 24/7 is that it will require a good bit more QPI volts, probably 1.45v+ depending on how good the CPU IMC is. For me that is too high for 24/7 usage and not worth the added heat.

Thank you for that opinion, i think i will run 1600MHz and try lowest latercy

what about the CPU settings?
do you have any suggestion to bump it up to 4.0GHz?

Yes, I have read that before , but i am a bit confused. because when i look at my QPI and UnCore (UCLK) they show in MHz but on the internet, those guides show small numbers

"Uncore – This is basically the speed of everything which isn't your core (i.e. l3 cache, imc, etc). It should be 2x your memory speed but allows for multipliers higher than 2x as well. Stability will be greatest at 2x.

QPI – Quickpath interconnect - It's basically the intel equivalent of AMD's hypertransport. It's how the CPU and the x58 chipset communicate. It has multipliers of 18x, 22x, and 24x. The 920 should be left at 18x creating a 9:8 ratio between the uncore and the memory multiplier assuming you use the 8x ratio, which some claim offers the greatest stability. Although people have been able to run it at all sorts of ratios."

Nice! What all did you end up adjusting to get it stable? I just finished building my new rig last week and have the same motherboard/cpu combo. Would like to see if any others out there with this same setup have gotten it to over 4ghz stable and what settings in bios they made.
