Phenom II X4 Various Questions

Thread Starter
I'm attemping to overclock (with very little knowledge on the matter, dangerous I know) with my new mobo and cpu. I've found two options in my bios that seem to make a difference without changing any of the various voltages (which I'm even less knowledgeable about) but I'm really not sure of what they do and why.

%99 of the following is assumed.

1. CPU Ratio - I cannot be sure, but I think this greatly increased the score on the Windows performance index thing... It also increases the clock speed. It changes what My Computer says about my cpu speed.

2. FSB Frequency - This is the only recognizable option for me, as it was in my old Intel D975xbx2 bios. It seems to up the clock speed of the CPU. This doesn't change what My Computer says about my cpu speed.

Windows seems to boot less when the ratio is higher (BSOD)...

What is the difference and how do I use these to maximize my overclock?
I don't dare touch %95 of the rest of my bios. I do wish I was more well versed in such information. The manual tells me very little.

I understand only a limited increase in clock speed is possible without an increase in voltage to whatever parts of the cpu. I am only willing to overclock as much as stock voltages will let me at this point for 2 reasons:
- I'm a n00b
- I have insufficient cooling (at least most likely but I'm not willing to find out)

Any information AT ALL would be greatly appreciated.

Also, my system is running right now at 3850 MHz with a 17.5 multiplier from that ratio option (so says cpu-Z) and seems to be stable with just Firefox going.

First off, on seems to be stable with firefox. Check with a program like prime 95. if it's stable on that for about an hour, your ok, 3 hours, really good, 8-12hours, solid, more is better, etc.

Insufficient cooling, what cooling you have? You using any program to monitor your temps? Very important to not fry your chip! Try speed fan or coretemp.

As for multi and fsb, multi affects only your cpu, fsb affects cpu, cpu-nb, mem speed, and htt. Me, I'm in the process of overclocking right now, can't give a definitive what's more stable, best ask others, but I'm better off with the multi. Then again, I tuned the other parts of my system first, may be different for you.

Right now I'm using PC Probe to monitor temps... I didn't use Fanspeed before because that old mobo didn't play nice with it. If I use it now I'm gonna have to reconfigure my fans in my case because I managed to hook 2 fans up to the cpu heat sync and hook them both up to power... again I'm not sure but there appears to be 2 main speeds or types of fans my mobo uses. Case and power fans which spin relatively faster and cpu and rear fans which spin relatively slower... I have 2 very very fast small fans hooked up to my cpu. Is this smart?

nope your in the right spot.

Okay, lets start from the beginning, with Phenom II X4 do you have?
eg. 940 945 955 965

This will be a great help.

Next is: do you have a Black edition CPU? this means that your multiplier is unlocked (CPU ratio)

now you FSB, isn't like an FSB that you saw on your old intel board, AMD boards have something called a refference clock. Everything in your system goes by that clock through a series of multipliers. Your ref. clock is 200Mhz.
So you CPU would be like 200(ref. clock)*14(CPU ratio/multiplier) that gives you 2800Mhz on your CPU

if you have a locked multiplier (lets say your stuck at 14) then you need to up you ref. clock (beyond 200mhz) so put it to 210mhz.

That will increase your speed from 2800Mhz to ~2930Mhz.

But seeing as this is your reference clock (not same as FSB) it controls other parts of you system as well. Your RAM frequency (if you have a clock of 1066 on you ram, and you run @ 210 on your ref. clock, your RAM will run at ~2112Mhz) Your NB (Northbridge) and HT link (Hypertransport link) speeds.

So 1st: disconnect your RAM or slow it down, do this by going into your BIOS and lowering it to 800mhz (if yuo have DDR2 and your stock is 1066).
2nd: lower you HT link clock (default should be 1800Mhz) lower it to ~1400Mhz to start, do not worry about it slowing down your computer at that speed because the HT link is so wide that it is never saturated with information.
3rd: lower you NB clock (default is 2000Mhz) Lower it to about 1800Mhz to start off with.

Next you up your ref. clock

keep in mind, this works for ALL Phenom II processors, but if you have a Black edition CPU, there is another realm of overclocking, but it requires a lot more typing for me, and if you don't have a black edition CPU, it would be a waist of my time.
so please, what model is your CPU?

I do have Black edition 965. I also regret to inform you I believe my RAM is stock 667 mhz. I can put it up to 800mhz.

So I tried putting the RAM up to 1066 but since it can't I just have a blank screen. My old D975XBX2 was able to roll back such changes easily... can this mobo do anything similar without going inside and setting that jumper? (thats the only method I know)

OH! you have an M4N82 Deluxe too! oh that makes life 10x easier, yea ill get some pics of you BIOS, k, if anything goes wrong and you computer doesn't boot, like with that RAM issue, so your computer fires up, but doesn't post, you never see the green screen you do this.

hold down the power buttin till the system shuts down, press it again till it turns on, CMOS will reset itself and will go back to stock clocks, you never need to touch the board. ill be right back with some pics (56k warning)

Okay, i have to warn you first off: when i took these pictures (2 minutes ago), i normally have my northbridge a bit faster than normal (2200Mhz as opposed to 2000Mhz), but the rest is the same. (NB overclock increase performance alot too, if you need help with that, just holla)

So like i said before, it is your reference clock (200mhz) times your CPU ratio or multiplier that is your frequency, for me it is 200x14
other than my northbridge being faster than normal, you settings should work like this:

the 200x14 gives you:

Now you have a black edition CPU (all the cool kids have them).
This means that your multiplier is unlocked, you can set it to whatever you like and this will speed your CPU up without affecting other clocks.

This will make your CPU clock be 200x14.5 as opposed to 200x14 (yours is 200x17 i believe, but same idea) giving you a higher clock

that will overclock your CPU by using your multiplier and nothing else.
Now ill talk about the ref. Clock
Notice that the CPU goes faster, the RAM goes faster and so does the NB (the ht link goes faster too, but the BIOS does not update the value in real time)

let n=ref. clock
This is what i was talking about before, if you have a locked multiplier, i.e., i'm stuck @ 14xn
so to overclock i would be doing 210x14 220x14 230x14 etc. etc.

This affects the CPU frequency too (this is 14.5x210)

Now keep overclocking by touching you ratio ONLY, run either OCCT or intelburntest (runs on AMD too) to stress your CPU found here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/OCCT-(Ov...load-1880.html
http://downloads.guru3d.com/IntelBur...load-2047.html

run about 1/2hour between every multiplier up to check for stability along the way, if it crashes up your voltages (only on CPU first) go by .250v increments and repeat testing each time. Use CPUz http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...load-6980.html to check frequencies and voltages (stock and OCed)

DO NOT put your voltage passed 1.55v for safety and DO NOT let your temps exceed 55C

I thought i would save you some hassle and show you waht stock voltages are (for me)
your CPU voltage may be different, im not sure, but check CPUz to confirm that. Also set CPU VDDA voltage to 2.8v like me, that basically just keeps a steady flow of power to the CPU, does not actually increase voltage.

That should start you on your way, when you run into problems (and you will) post back and ill help you best i can.

I'd like to take this post to thank you. You've been far more help than I could have asked for. Thanks again.

Whats the difference between the Northbridge and the Southbridge?

Pending a bit more mastery with overclocking my CPU, is there a way to get at my GPU?
