Hey,

Whenever i try to play some AVI video files windows media player crashes it's file with nearly every other video format but won't seem to play some *.AVI files, also when i'm browsing the directories on my computer Explorer crashes this is quite rare but does somethime's happen.

I'm using WMP10 and i have SP2 installed (it was the same with SP1)

What could be wrong?

Thanks

It is most likely the encoding on the avi that is causing issues. Not all AVI's are alike they can be encoded using different methods. Each method requires a codec. Try downloading new codecs for DIVX and XVID (two of the most popular) and see if that helps.

I've just started downloading 'KLM Codec pack 1.46'

It contain's a wide range of codec's including the DivX and XVid versions that you mentioned.

We'll just have to wait and see if it works

Thanks

its most likely a codec problem... that codec pack will get you probably every codec youll need, and a whole lot more that you dont, so I recommend using vlc, www.videolan.org ... no codecs to bother with because it uses its own internal routines to decode media, and trust me, it plays almost anything... only things it doesnt play, due to legal reasons mostly, is .rm/ .rm*, .mov, some .wmv and h.264 is still classified as experimental but it has played most h.264 Ive tried

Same problem here! Here's the ticket I sent ATI:

Just installed my new x850 pro. For the first couples of days I played a lot of 3d games and everything was fine. I then wanted to watch some Divx movies that were working fine with my previous Sapphire 9800 but Windows Media Played would hang at the first frame.

I re-installed Divx codec and player but it would still hangs. I then tried other players to see if this was a Windows Media Player issue, but Real Player also locks-up at the first frame. I then tried the Divx Player and it worked just fine (??). I then tried re-installing Divx 5.2 but same thing would happen. Also tried rolling back to Catalyst 5.12 but that would even make Divx Player hang at the first frame.

We'll wait and see...

This is what I use for my video playback. It'll play anything you throw at it.
