DX9 cards playing DX10 games

say we have a 7800GTX 512MB, how well would a top of the line uber card like that play the first DX10 games?
I think it won't at all... I don't know what microsoft is thinking but so far I am pretty sure DX9 cards won't run DX10.

well, did DX8 cards play DX9 games at all?
one thing i noticed that CSS detects the hardware of my GTX as DX9+, so maybe it will support a few more advanced features?? but not full DX10. i dunno though.

yes, they can assuming the game has a DX8 mode, but DX8 cards cannot run games in DX9 mode. that's why newer games like HL2 and COD2 often will let you force older DX modes

They better, or Microsoft will have a huge problem at hand... Unless SP3 proves worthy. I believe this is why Vista is so delayed, as well as DX10. TThey might be trying to make it so old cards and monitors can run them.

You will be able to play DX10 games with DX9 cards. Read a little more here. It may not be fully compatible, but playable =)
If it wasn't playable.. that would be like millions of people that may not buy another video game for a while crushing the video game industry.

Simple fact:

DX 10 cards have all features of DX10 right down to DX 1, thus it can play all the games using anything upto DX10, including those feature set.

DX 9 cards can play all games from DX9 to DX1 for example, however if the card is forced to work in DX10 mod, it will, but it will not. It will because it will use the DX 9 feature set, so other features that DX 10 will offer, such as a new form of lighting or a new graphic smearing process, will not be seen.

For instance, take the HL2 engine, it can run a Direct X 7.0 card in DX 9, however it will not use any of the DX 9 features, so basicly your playing the game with DX 7, but usually the game will use other features of DX 9 that the card will be able to support, but because the card was not made for DX 9, the performance will be significantly poor because the card has no other new or optimized ways to display these graphics.

hmm so does this mean that its usless to get an expensive video card with directx9 supported since directx 10 will be released soon in next year.
After I read this thread, i drop my choice on GS agp, which i was willing to spend $200+ on it instead i purchased an Evga 6600 gt.

So you will have to have a REALLY6 good card to run a dx10 game at med settings and you won't even get all the features, well that sucks but at least it isn't as bad as what I heard was gonna happen.
