Linux wont reconize my hard drive

Thread Starter
When I go to install Linux Fedora Core 1, it boot from the cd rom drive ok, then it says it does not detect a hard drive. It will give me a list of devices drivers to choose from. The only one it lets me load is the USB mass storage unit. This is also how Windows reconizes it but it also shows as a hard drive and everything works fine in Windows.

What can I do to get Linux to reconize my hard drive so I can finish the installation. My hard drive is a Matox Serial ATA -150 300Gb. is there a way to get linux to reconize a SATA drive?

Thanks for any help.

The first thing I would try is using an newer version of Fedora (currently Fedora Core 4).

If that doesn't work, boot off a knoppix cd to see if it's just Fedora. If knoppix can see it (drives it sees should appear on the desktop after booting completes) try another distro. Though if the drive isn't formatted (and it probably isn't if you're about to install an OS) knoppix probably won't put an icon on the desktop, though you can look through the dmesg (go to a console and type dmesg | less) and look for where it recognizes your drive.
