Intel P4 Prescott 2.8GHz idle at 46 Celsius

Thread Starter
I took my 2.8GHz and OC'ed it to 3.0GHz (143x21.0) and it's at 46-49 Celsius idle . I opened 3 windows of Firefox, AIM, Core Center (what I used to OC), Opera and Limewire. While opening Limewire it went up to 66C, but with those programs idle it went down to 52C. I have 2GB of PC4300 RAM, and I'm just wondering if this is too hot?

yes it is too hot you probably seated the heatsink incorrectly or put too much thermal grease on. Be careful, take off the heatsink. Clean the top of the cpu and bottom of heatsink with some cotton dabbed in an alcholic liquid. After put a small dot of thermal grease, 2mm diameter, on the middle of cpu. Then put the heatsink on and make sure it stays in place (test by holding board down and pull on heatsink gentle to see if it moves a lot)

Little toasty, I would say to get some thermal compund and spread it on the Heatsink. You want to keep it below 65c, but i like it around 60c.. Also, you might want to consiter investing in some case fans, propper (spelling ) case airflow is a necessary if your trying to improve temps. There cheap and are well worth their preformance.. I really like the multi on your processor, you will get far with that thing. Btw, welcome to the fourms

Right now I am running Prime95, which is supposed to be a very rigorous test on the CPU, correct? The temp right now is 64 and will hit 65 once in a while. I am looking to invest in a better cooling system. Are there any you would recommend? Should I just get a better heatsink/fan, would liquid cooling be necessary, gah I am pretty new to computers so I'm not sure. But thanks

Yes, Prime95 Loads your CPU @ 100% finding prime numbers.

Oh, you dont want to get that, that is for a GPU (graphics card) not for a CPU.
I would highly recommend this, there a very good cooler for the price..

For a more wallet friendly solution, this Zalman is a decent cooler for 30 bux.

Btw, liquid cooling isnt necessary for overclocking, it just helps with the temps. Stick with air for now, and get water in the next rig

Yeah I caught that over a quick overview of the product , I'm thinking about getting the ThermalRight, but it's only a heatsink, so would I need to buy a seperate fan? And what would you expect for a temperature drop from this?

By the way, thanks a lot wowza. I have been posting at the gamefaqs board, and they are terrible compared to this board, it takes up to 15 minutes for a response most of the time.

Get the Thermaltake Big Typhoon (it's a heatsink + fan) and it would cost less than the Thermalright option.
Water cooling is only necessary if you intend to do some moderate overclocking. But even with the Big Typhoon you can get excellent temperature results on an overclocked cpu. It's one of the best air coolers out there.

Okay, I found the Big Typhoon on eWiz for $40, what kind of temperature drops should I expect if I got it? Low enough so that I can OC my CPU to 3.2 GHz and still have good temps?

Different systems have different affects but if you switch to a Big T and put some artic silver 5 thermal compound on it it should lower your temps by a large amount.

Than yeah, I will definitely get the Big Typhoon. Thanks a lot guys

I might not be able to get this for a few weeks, but possibly within a week. Would you recommend me setting my CPU back to 2.8 GHz instead of 3GHz? Even though they run at similar temperatures? Just so you know I am running Prime95 Torture Test for the last 2.5 hours and it's running at 64C with no errors or anything of the sort. The only program that I use that even comes close to pushing my PC is Counterstrike Source, and that only uses 20-40%.
